Early Years
Growing up in the Catskills of New York, Gavin DeGraw started his up and coming career as musician. His mother was a specialist at a Botox clinic, and his father was nothing more than a prison guard. Attending the Berklee College of Music at the same time that John Mayer attended, DeGraw would go on to be known for his hit single that was featured on the hit television show One Tree Hill. He grew up with two older brothers named Joey and Neeka, Gavin would start out playing the piano at age eight, eventually touring the country displaying his many talents to him adoring fans.
Early Career
Cutting his teeth in Manhattan nightclubs, Gavin DeGraw started playing clubs with pianists Lenny Revell and Andrew West, adding to the night club's guest list with many of his fans from his hometown. The biggest break as of yet is the song titled I Do't Want To Be, which would eventually be used as the theme song for the teenage hit television drama One Tree Hill.
The song has been featured at many other instances such as American Idol and a host of other "Idol" programming in many other countries. He has gained acclaim also on the radio with the hit single Chariot, which did not break into the top charts but furthered his listening audience throughout the United States. He began to catch hold and his new fame began to book him at many establishments throughout the United States. He appeared before a live television studio audience on the late night television show Last Call with Carson Daly as well as
The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and also on the show hosted by David Letterman. Along with appearances on late night television, he caught the eye of some morning shows as well such as The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Live with Regis and Kelly. After his television appearances, Gavin DeGraw created music videos of the hit singles I Don't Want To Be as well as Chariot.
Emerging Artist
All the while that DeGraw was touring the United States, he was accompanied by his older brother Joey DeGraw, which played rhythm guitar and back up vocals. He would go on to tour during this time, opening up for bands such as Barenaked Ladies and The Allman Brothers Band. Although Gavin DeGraw did not become super wealthy over these years, he did make some smart business decisions. One of these is The National Underground, which is a music venue located in New York City.
The venue focuses on Americana and is at 159 East Houston Street in Manhattan's famous Lower East Side. This was in some parts a business decision but also what later DeGraw would say was as a place for up and coming musicians to come and play, listen and learn, and simply hang out. One of the main points was to create a venue in which all artists alike could respect the place as a spot that he or she would eventually want the chance to play at. During this time, DeGraw was also working in the studio.
The Next Release
DeGraw would release another album self titled Gavin DeGraw in May of 2008. The album climbed into the US Billboard Charts to the spot of number seven. There were other singles released off of the album that made a run at the charts but none were featured for more than a short period. Some of these singles would include Cheated On Me and She Holds a Key.
After completing the album, he went on a tour of the country to support his new release, but immediately following the tour he went back into the studio.
