There were songs about life. I make sure the songs I pick bring out some sort of emotion in you, make you laugh, make you cry, make you angry, something.

The Early Days

Gary Allan Herzberg, better known by his sate name, Gary Allan, was born and raised in La Mirada, California. He began playing in honky tonks with his father when he was thirteen years old. His high school band was the The Honky Tonk Wranglers. They played after graduation, and had developed a fan following that would pack the clubs.

Allan met songwriter/producer Byron Hill, and in 1995, Hill arranged a series of showcase performances for Allan, with RCA scheduled for the second day. However, Decca was so impressed with Allan's music that they offered a contract immediately and asked them to cancel the remainder of the showcase.

Becoming a Star

Gary Allan recorded and released his first album in 1996. Used Heart for Sale released four singles, all of which hit the Country Top 40, and Her Man reached the Top 10. The album ultimately certified gold. After a marginally successful album in 1998, he released Smoke Rings in the Dark, with MCA Records (Decca had closed their doors). The album produced three singles, including Right Where I Need to Be, which peaked at #5 on the US Country charts.

In 2001, Allan had his first #1 hit with Man to Man, a single from his album, Alright Guy. In 2003, Allan and his wife moved from California to Tennessee. A year later, his wife, who had suffered from depression and migraines, committed suicide. His 2005 album, Tough All Over, dealt with his grief from that loss. The album debuted at #3 on the US Country charts and moved to #1, certifying platinum.

Here and Now

Since 1996, Gary Allan has released eight studio albums and one compilation. Of these, he has had three gold records and three platinum. His most recent album, Get Off on the Pain, released early this year, is showing the same promise. The single, Today, was released in late 2009 to the radio and on line. It has enjoyed frequent airplay and heavy traffic on line from fans seeking mp3 downloads of the hit. In the first week of its release, the album sold 65,000 copies.

He concluded his tour promoting the album at the end of 2009. Guests for various performances included the Eli Young Band, Justin Moore, and Stoney LaRue. The tour lasted three months and covered twenty-five cities. He is currently back out on the road through the end of the summer.
