G-Unit – More Than 50’s Band
“Basically, I think its real life behind the album and the controversy behind the album. There's a lot of things that 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Young Buck and Tony Yayo are saying on that album that's gonna make you stop and say, "Uh oh, hold up. I know he didn't just say that." – Young Buck (G-Unit Member)
The Formation
G-Unit a hip-hop group originating on New York City in 2002, they released several independent mixed tapes which were released by the band themselves. The first incarnation of G-Unit had 50 Cents, Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo – all three of them were friends selling drugs on the streets in New York City. G-Unit member 50 Cent rose to international fame from his first solo album on Interscope Records. The phenomenal debut success of the first album gave 50 Cents a chance to bring his friends and G-Unit into the picture. They released several mix tapes which brought them a lot of attention in the rap industry.
Debut Album
However G-Unit suffered a set back when Tony Yayo was sent to prison on gun related charges. In Nov 2003, they released their first album “Beg for Mercy” which debut at No.2 on the US album charts. Largely due to his massive popularity of 50 Cents, the album featured the hit single “Stunt 101”. The album went on to sell 2 million copies in the US and 2 million in Canada as well. The record was released on the newly started G-Unit records with 50 Cents at the helm.
The rapper The Game was put in to G-Unit by Interscope Records but quickly developed a feud with 50 Cents which escalated into public insults through songs. Many people however believe that the feud was just to create buzz for their up coming music and a pure publicity stunt.
The Sophomore
The rest of the band would wait on 50 Cents who would release another chart topping album which would go on to be his second biggest seller. The artist would also tour globally establishing himself as a rap superstar. Business interests of 50 Cents would also take up a lot of his time.
Eventually, G-Unit would get together to record their follow-up album. Released in July 2008, “T.O.S: Terminate on Site” would debut at no.4 on the US charts. However the album is considered a disappointment due to poor sales. And has not been able to achieve Gold status in the US despite a minor hit single. The group would be involved with major feuds with other rappers and their launch a clothing line as well. It has been rumored that a new album is on the horizon in 2010.
