Fred Hammond – Pioneer of Urban Praise & Worship Sound
''I grew up under Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind and Fire, Prince, the Winans, Andrae Crouch, REO Speedwagon, and classical music. That music reflects all the music that's in me." Fred Hammond
The distinctly unique brand of cutting edge urban gospel that Fred Hammond is known for comes from his appreciation of music genres that include funk, rock, disco, jazz fusion and rhythm and blues in addition to the traditional gospel music he grew up singing in churches throughout Detroit.
The Foundation
Although born two days after Christmas in 1960 in Arlington, Texas, all of Fred’s growing up years took place in Detroit, Michigan. He returned to Texas in 2005 when he relocated his operations to Dallas from Detroit. Since his mother was a choir director is was only natural for him to become a member of his church choir in his early teens but his interest in music was not limited to singing. Bass is only one of the many instruments Fred could play but it was his bass playing ability that won him a place with the Winans when he was in his barely twenty. It’s possible that those early years with the group that broke the gospel sound barrier and introduced the first wave of contemporary gospel music to the world is what lit the inspirational fire in Fred. He has been active in mixing the mainstream sounds of hip hop, rhythm and blues, and jazz with dynamic praise and worship lyrics ever since.
Commissioned to Solo
From 1985 to 1991 Fred Hammond was part of the group Commissioned that included Keith Staten, Michael Brooks and Marvin Sapp. Together they recorded 10 albums in which Fred applied his considerable talents to vocals, songwriting, arranging and production. After six years each member moved on to successful solo projects. From 1991 to 2009 Fred Hammond has infused the gospel music genre with vibrant soul inspiring sounds that have gone Platinum several times over. Beginning with his first solo album, I am Persuaded, Baby Face Hammond has been consistently present in the low numbers on R&B/Hip Hop as well as the Top Contemporary Christian and Gospel Album charts with over a dozen albums of his own and many more collaborations. In 2008 Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album Grammy Award for his 11th album, Free to Worship, was added to the ten Dove and Stellar Awards received from 1992 to 2005 in categories ranging from Inspirational, Contemporary Gospel, Producer, Male Vocalist and Contemporary Male Vocalist of the Year. His latest album, Love Unstoppable, which was released in 2009 made #1 on the Top Gospel Albums chart.
