The Singer from Elysian Fields

Frank Sinatra was born in 1915 in Hoboken, New Jersey which is acknowledged to be the birthplace of Baseball. Born to Italian immigrants the singer had a difficult early life, as he was constantly getting into fights and trouble with the law. His first big break came when in 1939 after listening to many demos legendary band leader Tommy Dorsey asked him to join his band. The band toured America and Sinatra got early recognition as a performer with star power. By 1943, Sinatra had gone solo and was making performing on stage to rioting fans.

From 1945 – 1949 Sinatra recorded and performed all over America and “Sinatra mania” was starting! In 1953 he won an academy award for his movie “From Here to Eternity” and he never looked back. After signing with Capitol records Sinatra released some of his best and most commercially successful albums ever. From 53-57 he recorded emotional ballads and hip swing music which were chartbusters. His song “I’ve got you under my skin” became one of his biggest hits. His next album “Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely” stayed on the charts for an unprecedented 120 weeks.  

The Rat Pack!

In 1960 Frank Sinatra started his own record label Reprise records which prompted his title Chairman of the Board. His TV show even had Elvis as guest which was an iconic show. Frank Sinatra then made the original “Oceans 11” with his friends popularly knows as the Rat Pack. (Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford.) Their notoriety of womanizing and heavy drinking has been well documented. Sinatra also played a Martin Luther King benefit at the legendary Carnegie Hall. Sinatra became an unlikely hero of the early 60s African American equality.

Along with legendary jazz pianist Count Basie he recorded Sinatra-Basie, an iconic album with the jazz and melodic sounds gave Frank Sinatra one of his big albums. The song “I won’t dance” is one of his most memorable recordings. In 1966 Sinatra recorded his first album from his residency performance at the Las Vegas Sands called “Sinatra at the Sands” was a massive success.
”A Man and His Music” gave Sinatra a Grammy Album of the Year! Throughout the 60’s Frank recorded hit selling singles like “Strangers in the Night” another Grammy winning song; TV specials and stage shows were phenomenal success.

My Way

In 1970, pop singer Paul Anka wrote “My Way” for Frank Sinatra. Based on a French Pop song, Anka completely changed the melodic structure and the words. Frank recorded it in the summer of 1970. The opening lines “And now that the end is near” has Frank written all over it. The somber beginning leading to the defiance crescendo of “I did it my way!” is a man showing his wounds, his soul and yet his self belief and strength. It shows the two sides of the legend.

The 70s touring

A 55 year old Sinatra performed a benefit concert and then bid farewell. In ’73 his “Ol’ Blue Eyes is Back” was a hit and the “Send in the Clowns” was a dramatically intense song. By ’74 he was back at Las Vegas performing at Caesars Palace. An international tour of Europe and Australia followed. Sinatra performed in front of the Egyptian pyramids for a concert for the President Anwar Sadat.  

The King of New York

In 1980 Frank Sinatra recorded a highly ambitious triple album “Trilogy: Past Present Future” which produced his classic “Theme from New York”. He even recorded “Something” the George Harrison love song which Sinatra has often acknowledged as his favorite.

The 90s Sinatra

Celebrating is 75^th birthday he went on a nation wide tour. And also played at the Meadowlands Arena in his home town at New Jersey. In ’93 he recorded a successful “Duets “performing some of all-time classics with an array of superstars from Tony Bennet to Bono.

He won the Lifetime Achievement Award at ’94 Grammy with an introduction from Bono and a standing ovation which Sinatra himself acknowledged “the best welcome .. I ever had”

Frank Sinatra died in 1997 in LA with his wife Barbara by his side. And the next few days everyone from President Clinton to Elton John paid tribute to the glittering career of Frank Sinatra. He is arguably the greatest artist of the 20^th century.
