Foo Fighting Style
The Foo Fighters was formed in 1995, when a singer/guitarist from Seattle, Washington, decided to form a one-man project after the death of his friend, Kurt Cobain and the break up of the band Nirvana. After performing alone for some time, Dave Grohl added William Goldsmith, Pat Smear, and Nate Mendel to the band. The band released their debut album entitled, Foo Fighters, and began to gain some popularity in the Portland music scene.
Before the band recorded their second album, The Colour and the Shape,William Goldstein and Pat Smear left the band in 1997. Despite leaving the Foo Fighters, Pat Smear assists with live performances with the band.They were replaced by Taylor Hawkins and Franz Stahl, but that was short lived. Prior to recording the Foo Fighters third album, There Is Nothing Left to Lose, in 1999, Stahl left the band as well. Shortly after releasing this album, the band recruited Chris Shiflett to play the guitar.
They later released their fourth album in 2002, called One by One. The follow- up album was a two-disc collection of acoustic and hard rock songs, which they released in 2005, entitled, In Your Honor. The Foo Fighters released their last album in 2007, called Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace.
Member Bios
David Eric Grohl was born in Warrren, Ohio, on January 14, 1969. Dave started his music career in the Washington, D.C. Area playing the drums for several local bands. He played drums for the band Scream, and in 1990, he became a member of the grunge band, Nirvana. Aside from playing with the Foo Fighters, Dave Grohl has worked on projects with Nine Inch Nails, The Prodigy, and Tenacious D. He also formed another band with John Paul Jones and Josh Homme called Them Crooked Vultures.
Chris Aubrey Shiflett was born on May 6, 1971 in Santa Barbara, California. Before he became a member of the Foo Fighters, he was the lead guitarist for No Use for a Name, a punk rock band from the Bay Area. Chris currently plays guitar for four other bands: the Gimmie Gimmes, Viva Death, Me First and Jackson United.
Nathan Gregor “Nate” Mendel was born in Richland, Washington on December 2, 1968. He began playing the bass in the punk rock band, Diddly Squat. He later played with the popular punk bands, Christ on a Crutch, Galleons Lap, and Brotherhood. Before becoming the bassist for the Foo Fighters in 1995, Nate joined Juno and Sunny Day Real Estate, which he still plays with to this day.
Oliver Taylor Hawkins was born on February 17, 1972, in Forth Worth, Texas. He started his career playing the drums for Alanis Morissette on her Jagged Little Pill tour. He was introduced to the Foo Fighters frontman by his cousin and eventually became the bands drummer. Since 2004, he has also been singing and playing the drums for his band, Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders.
A little too much Foo
In 2000, Nate Mendel held a benefit concert in Los Angeles in support of Alive & Well AIDS Alternatives, a radical group that believes HIV is not the cause of AIDS.
A year later, while performing at the V Festival, Taylor Hawkins collapsed due to an appearant overdose of prescription drugs and alcohol. In 2003, Dave Grohl was arrested in Australia for driving under the influence. He blood alcohol level was said to be double the legal limit in Queensland.

… Chris Shiflett has a tattoo on the inside of his bottom lip that says, “Gimme Gimme.”
… Three out of the six Foo Fighters seven have won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.
