In a short span of time, the band has achieved widespread acclaim and commercial success in the US metal scene. The music is melodic rock and it's the vocals of Lacey Mosley which is delivered in the best traditions of Cranberries and Garbage. Her wailing baritone vocal give the band its creative core. Flyleaf has already achieved platinum success with their first album and worldwide attention with the release of the second.


The aggressive and emotionally charged live shows have built a dedicated fan base. They have gone on numerous tours playing festivals and supporting slots for many artists. The theme in their songwriting is of isolation and self depreciation. It is the personal experience driven songwriting which creates the moodiness and brooding atmosphere.


The Roots


It was when Lacey Mosley started jamming with drummer James Cullpepper and they roped in Sameer Bhattacharya and Jared Hartmann both guitar players. They also recruited bassist Pat Seals by 2002. the band was known by the name Passerby and recorded some demos but it was the touring which got them the initial attention. They played over 100 shows in a span of two years in Texas. They traveled to New York City to record perform for RCA record executives. RCA did not sign them but it Octone Records showed a lot of interest. Octone had artists like Maroon 5 in their roster.


By Jan 2004, the band signed with Octone Records and by March they were in Seattle recording an EP. During 2004 they toured with the likes of Breaking Benjamin, Staind and 3 Doors Down. The EP was released and it also launched the first single "Breathe Today" accompanied a video.


Breaking Into the Mainstream


After touring for almost the entire 2004, the band moved into the studio to record their first album. The album was produced by Howard Benson. By October 2005, the band released their self-titled first album. The first two singles did not chart but it was their third single "All Around Me" which peaked at No. 40 on the US 100. This is also the time when the band was being labeled as a Christian band. The album has been certified platinum.


In 2006, the band was booked on the main stage of Korn's Family Values Tour. In late 2006, Flyleaf continued to tour and was part of the Music as Weapon Tour by Disturbed. Going international they played the Soundwave Festival in Australia and toured Europe with other bands. In 2007 they were back on the Family Values tour and their video "I'm So Sick" appeared on the Bruce Willis movie Live Free or Die Hard.


The band had a very strong fan following due to their relentless touring for nearly 2 years. In 2008 they released another video called "Sorrow" from their first album on MTV2. The band was enjoying a lot of attention and wanted to move into the studio to record a follow-up album.


Memento Mori


The band received an accolade from Rolling Stone magazine called the breakout artist of the year. They started recording the second album with Howard Benson. They had already developed a few songs while on tour. "Beautiful Brides" had already been played live during their tours. Released in Nov 2009m "Memento Mori" was were inspired by a self-help book called Wild At Heart. The band flew down to Afghanistan to perform an acoustic set for the US army station in Kabul. The album was their highest charting album on the US Billboard at No.8. It was also a No.1 on the Alternative charts.


The band created a special promotional event by inviting fans for a VIP party that would allow them to listen to the albums music. These parties were held all over the country. Lacey Mosley and Sameer Bhattacharya are scheduled to even appear at these events as part of the promotion for the album.


At the moment the band is on their headlining tour to promote the album. The 2010 tour is scheduled till June.
