Five for Fighting was founded by the songwriter John Ondrassik who uses the title Five for Fighting as his on stage name. He was born in Los Angeles in January of 1968 and was the child of a musical family where he quickly learned to play the piano and would go on to also learn the guitar and begin to compose music. He would attend the University of California at Los Angeles where he would gain a degree in science and math while still writing music and playing in local clubs and bars.
Career Start
Five For Fighting would go on to release the first album called Message for Albert that was released on the record label EMI in 1997. the album would gain little acclaim in the music community, which would prompt John to release his next album called America Town in 2000. This album did little to propel his career although he did have one single on this album that would go on to gain much acclaim. The song Superman would go on to gain quite a bit of radio play and would be seen on many documentaries and memorial soundtracks for the September 11 attacks.
He would also go on to perform a free concert for the city of New York in response to the attack. The album did not chart on any of the billboard charts although the album would eventually go platinum due to its consistent sales. After a tour in support for the album, Five For Fighting would go back into the studio to begin work on his next album.
Further Success
The album called The Battle For Everything would be his first charted album that would reach the number twenty position on the Billboard 200 charts in February of 2004. This was his first major success and he had now gained the attention of both pop audiences as well as adult contemporary. The album would also contain the hit single called The Riddle that would be his third single to make the Top 40 charts in the United States. During this time, he had afforded himself a very large fan base and would go on tour to gain more attention and acclaim. He also began starting to write music for others.
In 2008, John would begin a work called Brothers In Arms that would be featured on the documentary called Brothers at War, which documented the accounts of many United States service men and women who served in the military. The film showed the effects on both the men and women who fought, as well as the family side back home waiting for their return. After taking some time off, he went back to the studio to continue his own works.
Present
In 2009, John would release the single from his next album. The song was called Chances, which would also be released on VH1 in the form of a music video. The single was off of his new album called Slice that would be released in 2009. During this same time, his album that was his third release called The Battle for Everything would be certified platinum.
