Feist

Sometimes I forget that I'm a musician though. Yesterday, I played a song at the radio. And while I was doing the little soundcheck I thought, "Oh yeah, I'm a musician. I play music now because that's what I do."

Roots in the Arts

Feist, nee Leslie Feist, was born in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada.  Her father is an abstract artist, and her mother is a ceramic sculptor.  Feist, herself, sang in choirs and aspired to be a writer.  Her father was an American citizen, so she carries dual American/Canadian citizenship.

In 1991, at the age of 15, Feist became the lead singer for Canadian punk band Placebo.  They won a battle of the bands contest and were awarded a spot in a festival called Infest in 1993, headlining The Ramones.  At this concert, she met Brendan Canning, then of the band hHead.  Ten years later they would collaborate and form the band Broken Social Scene.

A Career of Her Own

After eight years of performing an collaborating, Feist recorded the album, Monarch (Lay Your Jewelled Head Down).  The album was only mildly successful; she recorded the follow-up album in 2004, Let it Die.  From 2004 through 2006, she toured Europe, Asia, North America, and Australia, promoting the album.  In 2004, Feist won two Canadian Juno awards for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Rock Album.  The album certified platinum in Canada and gold in France. The video for the single, One Evening, was nominated for a Juno for Video of the Year.

In 2007, Feist's third solo album, The Reminder went gold in the United States.  She launched a worldwide tour to promote the album.  Apple chose the single, 1234, to be featured in their commercial for the nano.  Another interesting fact about this song is that it hit the top 10 based on downloads alone.  Prior to the iPod nano commercial, the song sold over 73,000 mp3 downloads.

The Present and the Future

Following the wildly successful The Reminder, Feist announced that she needed to take a break from music for a little while.  She has, in fact, taken a break from recording, but has continued to work with friends and associates, collaborating on their musical projects.  She collaborated with Brooklyn band Grizzly Bear on their song, Service Bell, and appeared on stage with them in Toronto in 2009.  She has joined with former band, Broken Social Scene, for several performances in 2008 and 2009.

It is rumored that Feist will appear on Broken Social Scene's album, Forgiveness Rock Record, due out in 2010.  Her songs and albums are still selling on line and in stores, and her music videos are available for streaming on her site and on YouTube.
