Fall Out Boy

. . . when you want your songs to be heard by as many people as possible: you have to take everything else that goes along with it. Everyone likes to see themselves on the screen, but I'm not trying to lick the reflection off the TV. It's flattering and it's really cool, but at the same time there's other things out there that make my world go 'round.

The Beginning

In 2001, a pair of friends, Joe Trohman and Pete Wentz, who had played in a number of hardcore punk bands around Chicago, got together and decided to put together a band.  They found their lead singer, Patrick Stump, in a chance meeting at a Borders Bookstore.  They recruited two additional Chicago musicians to complete the band.

After a year of performing in local venues, they released a demo independently, entitled Split EP.  The following year, they released their debut album, the 9-track An Evening out With Your Girlfriend, on Uprising Records.  Lyrics were written by Patrick Stump, primarily pulled from his own experiences.

Picking up Momentum

In 2003, after some changes in the band's line-up, Fall Out Boy signed a contract with recording company, Fueled by Ramen.  They released the album, Take This to Your Grave.  The album ultimately certified gold, but only after the release of their next album.  From Under the Cork Tree was released in 2005.  it sold 2.5 million copies in the United States alone, and certified double platinum.

Their next album, Infinity on High,  released in 2007, sold 260,000 copies in their first week.  The album certified in the US, the UK, Australia, and  Canada.  Spawning five singles, including the platinum hit, This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race, the album ushered Fall Out Boy officially into the mainstream.  They followed up this successful whirlwind with their 2008 release, Folie a Deux.  The lead single, I Don't Care, was released on iTunes, available for mp3 download or streaming.  The song was later named #68 on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of Top 100 songs of the year.

Here and Now

In 2009, Fall Out Boy launched their Believers Never Die Part Deux Tour.  They also performed with Kanye West and Kid Rock at the Youth Ball in honor of President Barack Obama's inauguration.  In April of that year, they released the EP, America's Suitehearts: Remixed, Retouched, Rehabbed & Retoxed, to iTunes.

In late 2009, the band announced they were taking a hiatus; by 2010, band members, one by one, clarified this to mean that the band had broken up.  At this point, there is no indication of any future reunion, but their music is still available and in demand for download online.

Did you know . . .

  1. Fall Out Boy gave their first two performances without a name.  At the second concert, they asked for a suggestion, and “Fall Out Boy” was one of the ideas shouted from the audience.

  2. Patrick Stump auditioned to be the band's drummer, but was chosen as lead singer.  Later, he moved to guitar.

  3. Between 2005 and 2008, Fallout Boy won 15 awards, including MTV Video Awards, Teen Choice Awards, and TMF Awards.
