The Voice
Enya’s voice is a gift for everyone. Her style of opera based melodic Gaelic music has captured the imagination of the entire world. Her music is soft, romantic and very much based on classical music. The music has been termed New Age Pop in America, based on piano and strings. Enya’s phenomenal success has seen her albums go multi-platinum all over the world. Her ethereal music stands as beacon for traditional Irish singing and mixed with synth based melodies and rich production.
The Early Years
Enya was born Eithne Ni Bhraaonain was born in the county Donegal in Ireland. Her family was into music and even owned a pub. Enya started singing while in school but her real interest lied in playing the Piano. Along with her siblings she started the band Clannad in the 70s. Enya become a full-time member only in 1981, she provided backing vocals and keyboards. The band received commercial success in 1982, but their producer Nick Ryan left an Enya soon joined him and his wife Roma. The couple would play a huge role in the future success of Enya.
Going Solo and International Breakthrough
In 1987, she contributed vocals to Sinead O’ Connors first album. She was also commissioned by the BBC to provide music for the television documentary “The Celts”.
Her first major breakthrough came with the 1988 debut album “Watermark” which featured her first hit single “Orinoco Flow”; it topped the UK charts and reached No.5 on the US charts selling 12 million copies worldwide. The sound was completely original and different from anything in the music scene.
Despite the pressure from the Music label to release a quick follow-up, she released her second album “Shepherds Moon” in 2003. It peaked at No.1 on the US charts and sold 5 million in the US alone. The album feature “Caribbean Blue” which reached No.12 on the UK singles charts. “The Celts” in 1992 was less accessible in terms of its sound and featured music which was recorded from the previous BBC documentary.
Commercial Success Continues
Enya released “The Memory of Trees” in 1995 which was a huge commercial hit and sold nearly 8 million copies worldwide. But it would be her next album that would bring her to pop superstar status. Released 5 years after “The Shepherds Moon”. “A Day Without Rain” featured the global chart topping single “Only Time”. The album would go on to sell 7 million copies in the US. In 2001 she released another major hit single for the Lord of Rings Soundtrack called “May It Be”. Enya describes this recording as one of her most fulfilling.
Another 5 years later she released the platinum selling “Amaratine” in 2005 and “And Winter Comes…” in 2008.
