Eminem

“There was a while when I was feeling like, 'Damn, if I'd just been born black, I would not have to go through all this”

Marshall Bruce Mathers III is one of the most popular rappers in the world. He has been known to start plenty of fights and go out of his way to offend. As one of the few white rappers in the world with more than just one hit Eminem has continued to prove that he has staying power.

Painful Upbringing

His mother was only fifteen years old when she had him in Kansas City Missouri in October of 1972. His father left both him and his mother when Eminem was only six months old. From the time he was born until he was twelve years old he was shipped back and forth from Kansas City to Detroit. Once settled on Detroit he still moved frequently. This made it nearly impossible for him to make friends or stay out of trouble or in school.

Angry Musician

Eminem has been known to be an angry guy. This all began when he was a teenager and was not accepted as a serious rapper because of his race.

His first album was called Infinite and sold less than a thousand copies. The album had songs that talked about the struggle of raising his newborn daughter Hailie Jade Scott with long time girlfriend Kim Scott.

In 1997 Eminem went down to the Rap Olympics held in Los Angeles. He got second place and was noticed by Jimmy Lovine, the CEO of Interscope Records. His album was played for Dr. Dre and from there a relationship was formed and he was signed to Interscope Records.

Fast Track to Stardom

Once Dr. Dre got a hold of Eminem his career really took off. He helped to produce his second album The Slim Shady LP. The album was voted one of the most popular of 1999 and went triple platinum by the end of the year. One song in particular got a lot of attention. It was about taking a midnight ride with his young daughter to dispose of the dead body of Kim Scott in the song ’97 Bonnie and Clyde.

No One Is Safe

In the summer of 2000 the Marshall Mathers LP was released. In the first week the album sold almost two million copies. The Real Slim Shady was the first single off the album. It caused quite a stir with outrageous claims fellow musicians other celebrities.

Then came Stan a song about him trying to come to terms with his new found celebrity. In the song a fan becomes obsessed with him and mimics the actions taken in ’97 Bonnie and Clyde. This song showed a new side to Eminem that told that he was aware of the dangers of being a role model.

In 2002 he came out with his next album The Eminem Show in this album he continued to target other artists. In one particular song Without Me he makes fun of Limp Bizkit, Lynne Cheney, Moby and boy bands in general.

In 2004 Encore came out, from this album came the single Just Lose It. In this he makes fun of Pee Wee Herman, Madonna and most of all, Michael Jackson. This album went seven times platinum and sold 600,000 in the first week.

Movie Star

In late 2004 he starred in 8 Mile, a semi autobiographical movie about being a young white rapper growing up in Detroit. He wrote several songs for the movie including the Academy Award winning track Lose Yourself.

Guess Who’s Back

After a nearly four year hiatus Eminem released two new albums. In March of 2009, Relapse was released. The first single We Made You showed that he was back to his old self. Making fun of everybody and everything that had happened in the time he was gone it was official; he was back.

On December 21st 2009 Relapse: Refill was released. This album consisted of a re-release of Relapse with seven additional bonus tracks added on. It has been said that he will be working on a Relapse 2 set to be released sometime in 2010.
