Emery
Marked by hands I held as my anchor but in your shallow sea I drown…
Formed in the small urban city of Rock Hill South Carolina, the metal core rock group called Emery has gone on to be an influential band with Christian roots. The original members of the group were Toby Morrell, Devin Shelton, Matt Carter, and Joel Green and would go on to move to Seattle Washington, which they would later say was to propel their music career in a better environment. They would sign their first contract with Tooth and Nail Records.
Career Start
After moving to Seattle, the group would begin its contract with Tooth and Nail Records and go into the studio to produce their first album called The Weak’s End. It would be produced at what is called The Black Lodge and would be released in 2004. The album would gain little acclaim but would not deter the group to give up. The group would tour in support of the album with groups such as Haste the Day.
They would lose their drummer Seth Studley but he would come back later on. After their tour, the group went back to the studio and would go on to record their next album, which was to be called The Question and would be released in August of 2005. The first single release off of the album was called Studying Politics and the group would create a video from the single. However, the band was in for more line up changes that would come after the release of the album.
Changes and Present
The group would experience many changes during this time. Albums that were not producing the results that they were hoping for was starting to make for a long career for member Joel Green. The group would make some changes and then embark on another tour, this time with the Christian band called Underoath and the two groups would tour through Australia. After the tour, the group was planning on releasing another album, but somehow found its way to the internet before the planned release.
The album would receive very little acclaim and the band was attempting to hold things together. They had gained a very small following of fans that would continue to buy albums; however, little success was making many members restless. They would continue their tours in support of the albums with groups such as Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. The album was called I’m Only A Man and did not receive very good reviews from critics either.
Emery would go on to try and entice more sales of the album by re releasing a deluxe edition of the record although this would do little to promote the sales. In October of 2008, the group released an EP called While Broken Hearts Prevail and would go on to tour with the group called The Almost as their opening act. During this time, they would give their fans a taste of their new material as they were changing their style little by little.
The group would go on to release a few more singles and another album but neither would garner much success for the group. The many fans of the band can follow their up coming tour dates and new works in progress on the group’s official website. One may also be able to find some of their music as free music downloads across the internet or at least a few songs for internet screening. The group continues to tour and hopes to gain a solid fan base in the near future as their little found success has started to wane.
Did You Know
The group members are all Christians but they do not claim to be a Christian rock group because they are afraid this will limit their fan base.
They covered a song by Toad the Wet Sprocket on a 90’s punk tribute album.
