Fronted by Alex Lora, El Tri is a Mexican Rock band that formed originally in Mexico City. They were formally known as Three Souls in my Mind. El Tri began their music career in 1968. The music includes Blues-rock, acoustic rock, Rock and Roll, and Blues. Until their third album was released they sang in the English language.
The Early Years
The First time they performed live was on October 12, 1968. At the Avandano Festival, also known as the Mexican Woodstock, Three Souls in my Mind played for their largest audience of their career, in 1971. That concert made history in Mexico. They started to sing in English at that festival and then switched over to Spanish. They began to write most of their songs at that time and mostly recorded their albums in Spanish. They released a total of 15 albums under a Denver label. In 1985, the changed their lineup and their name.
Now singing in his traditional language, they experienced an entirely new audience. Alex Lora's songs started to reflect the real lives of the average Mexicans. Under their original name Three Souls in my Mind some of their albums produced were,Reclusorio Oriente En Vivo!, La Devaluacion, Coleccion Avandaro, Volume 2, Renovacion Moral and 15 Grandes Exitos. During the time they sung in the English language rock was seen as "unauthentic" in Mexico when they were sung in the Spanish language.
Changes
In the year 1985, Three Souls in my Mind changed their name to what their fans were already calling them, El Tri. Their album Simplemente in 1985 won them their first gold CD. That album contains their hit singles, Vicioso del Rocanrol, and Triste Cancion. In 1986, in Peru, their theme "Vicioso del rocanrol" became a hit. They topped radio charts with their song, Vicioso. This song became very popular in Peru. With the hits in Peru, they performed two concerts in Plaza de Toros Acho.
The following year, they came back to tour there in seven cities. Miguel Rios invited them to the First Rock Encounter at the Sports Palace in Madrid, Spain to perform. They performed with very popular bands in countries like Venezuela, Spain, Chile and Argentina.
Success in the States
They were a great success in the United States also. They performed in many places, like Houston, Chicago, New York, and California. For instance, in California alone they performed in Los Angeles, at the Sports Arena, The Olympic Auditorium, The Palace, Pico Rivera, The Hollywood Palladium, and many more places. They had two consecutive sold out concerts in New York for their performance in the Roseland. After performing in a Hispanic rock festival in Madrid, the band did a tour in the United States. In Mexico City, Hollywood's Palladium, and Santa Martha they recorded three live albums that were a success.
Awards
For contributing in a local movie, Un Ano Perdido they received an award from Mexican Cinematographic Academy. Sinfonico, Vol. 2 was released for their 33rd anniversary celebration.
El Tri album Simplemente in 1988 won an award in Regional Mexican, in 2002, the album No Te Olivides de la Banda won for Latin Pop and Top Latin Records. They won for Top Latin Albums also n 2003 for Los Numero Uno 1968-2003.
Band Members
El Tri's original members were Alejandro Lora (Alex Lora) as lead vocals and bass, Carlos Hauptvogel on the drums, and Ernesto de Leon was on lead guitar. Carlos Martinez played trumpet and Arturo Labastida played saxophone played on some of the albums. Also on some albums on guitar Sergio Mancera played.
Most Recently
El Tri continues to make music and release albums to this day. In 2004, they released their own album, Alex Lora: 35 Anos y lo que Falta Todayia as well as appearing on an MTV Unplugged album from a live recording that they had done back in 1994. From 2004 to 2009, they released five more albums. There currently is talk of them beginning work on another album later in 2010.
