Earth, Wind & Fire - In the beginning

Founder, musician Maurice White moved The Salty Peppers to Los Angeles opting for a change of venue and greater musical opportunities. In 1970 White cited three elements of his astrological chart and renamed the group Earth, Wind & Fire. Inviting his brother, Verdine, to join and recruiting several others EWF recorded their first two Warner Brothers albums, Earth, Wind And Fire and The Need Of Love.

The single I think About Lovin' You was a Top 40 R&B hit and started the epic decades-long history. In 1972 was a busy year, the line-up (except for Maurice and Verdine) was completely changed, EWF's music evolved from the primarily jazz that WB signed to a "more universal sound", and Columbia Records bought out their contract. Head to the Sky (summer 1973) became their first platinum album, followed by 1974's platinum Open our Eyes.

Earth Wind & Fire's first Grammy Award was for the 1975 multi-platinum That's the Way Of The World (Pop #1 for 3 weeks). EW&F went on to release over 19 studio, 5 live, 12 compilation, and 19 video albums along with more than 57 singles. Other multi-platinum releases were: Gratitude (1975, 3x), Spirit (1976, 2x), All 'N All (1977, 3x), The Best Of Earth, Wind & Fire Vol 1 (1978, 5x), I Am (1979, 2x). Gold releases include: Faces (1980), Powerlight (1983), Touch the World (1987), Earth Wind & Fire Vol 2 (1988), and the 2002 release of The Essential Earth, Wind & Fire.

The Legendary EWF

Over the years the group; has received 20 Grammy Nominations (won 6), was awarded the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences Signature Governor's Award, sold over 90 million albums, earned 50 Gold and Platinum album designations, 12 American Music Award Nominations (won 4). EWF was the first Black performers to receive the MSG Gold Ticket Award for a Garden sellout.

More honors to note were the induction into the NAACP Hall of Fame (1994), a star on the Hollywood Walk of fame (1995), The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (2000) induction, and when singles "That's The Way of The World" (2004) and "Shining Star" (2007) were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Earth, Wind & Fire accepted both ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Heritage Award and BET Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002, was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and Hollywood's RockWalk in 2003, and were honored at the Grammy Jam in 2004. Most recently, founder Maurice White was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2010.

No one could list all the over-the-top appearances or occasions that only a group of Earth, Wind & Fire's legendary history would have. A few notables include President Clinton's 2000 White House state dinner, followed up by a personal invitation to performing for the King of Morocco's birthday (2000), the closing ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympics, several appearances at the annual Grammy Awards, Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve (2004), Super Bowl XXXIX, the Idol Gives Back special edition of American Idol, Novel Peace Price Concert, They donated $25,000 from their 9/13 performance to the Red Cross (following 9/11),
