Band History
The band was originally formed in 1996 in Quincy, Massachusetts. Al Barr joined in vocals in 1999 and things started to turn around for the band. Ken Casey on bass. There have been several line-up changes over the course of the bands history.
They signed with Hellcat Records and released their debut album "Do or Die" in 1998. The album did not sell well and was considered under par in terms of commercial appeal. In 1999 they released their second album titled "The Gang's all Here". This was a pop punk album and got a lot of mainstream exposure especially after the release of single "10 Years of Service"
Mainstream Breakthrough
The third album "Sing Loud! Sing Proud!" in 2001 which was hailed by the critics as a progressive album. It featured collaboration from several punk pioneers. The band toured during the year and released their fourth album in 2003 titled "Blackout". The album featured "Fields of Atherny" which considered their signature sound. The band also recorded "Time to Go" for the ice hockey team based on Boston and was asked to play the song at the Fell Street center.
In 2004, their patronage of the Boston Red Sox baseball team leads to their recording of the song "Tessie". The song continues to be played at Red Sox game even to till this day.
The Letter
Their fifth album "The Warrior's Code" in 2005 cracked the Top 50 on the US album charts - a first for the Dropkick Murphys. It was in this album that a song a lot of attention for the band. "Last Letter Home" contains excerpts from a letter sent by Sgt. Andrew Farrar to his mother and wife while serving a tour of duty in Iraq. Sgt. Farrar was killed shortly after and the song is homage to the soldier who is in fact a fan of Dropkick Murphys. The single was released and all proceeds went to the Farrar family.
In 2007, Dropkick Murphys released "The Meanest of Times" which was their major label debut after they signed with Warner Music. They toured and remained busy with several projects. The band joined the Boss - Bruce Springsteen on his Working on a Dream tour in April 2009 where the band's guitar player proposed to his girlfriend. The band is working on a new album with a tentative released date in 2010
