Our first time in the US was a sold out headlining tour before the Inhuman Rampage album was released there. There has been a really strong underground following of DragonForce in the USA for a while now.
Starting Out
DragonForce, originally DragonHeart, formed in 1999 when guitarists Herman Li and Sam Totman got together and recruited the rest of what would become the band. They had released a demo and had been touring for four years when they learned that there was another band with the same name, and changed their name to DragonForce.
Valley of the Damned was their first single, released in 2000, which they promoted with a live concert video. The song was enthusiastically received, and was the #1 most requested single for download at MP3.com for two weeks. The band released the album, Valley of the Damned in 2003, and included the single on the release. They launched a world tour to promote the album, which saw the band playing to sell-out crowds.
Stardom
DragonForce's follow-up album, Sonic Firestorm, was even more successful. It was with the release of this album and the subsequent tour that the band became know as a “extreme power metal” band because of the speed at which Li and the bassist, Adrian Lambert, could play. The tour for the album included many more dates than their previous tour, and included bands like W.A.S.P. and Iron Maiden.
Their third album, Inhuman Rampage, launched DragonForce into the mainstream. Their single, Through the Fire and Flames, was featured on the video game, Guitar Hero III, as the most difficult song to beat. The combination of their build in popularity and the fame brought about by the popularity of the video game helped the album rocket to #1 on the US Heatseekers chart and the #4 on the US Indie charts.
The Present and the Future
DragonForce toured throughout the summer of 2008 with Slipknot and Disturbed. After wrapping up the tour, they released Ultra Beatdown, which earned them a nomination for a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. Their single, My Apocalypse is featured on the video games, Skate 2 and NHL 10. All of 2009 was dedicated to touring, including an expansive world tour to promote the album.
In February of 2010, DragonForce re-released Valley of the Damned and Sonic Firestorm with remixes and bonus singles. They also released a box set complete with a t-shirt and an inflatable guitar. Their next album is due out in 2011. For the duration of 2010, the band has multiple tour dates planned in France, Switzerland, Portugal, and the United Kingdom.
