Dorrough - A Multi-talented Man
"I'm bringing an original Dallas sound to the world that was never exposed. We've always had our own swag, our own style, but we never got to the point where we could bring that out."
Although still a college student Dorrough graduated from personally handing out mixtapes to seeing his first studio album, Dorrough Music, rank in the low numbers in August of 2009. About the man
Dorwin Demarcus Dorrough was born on October 28, 1986 in Dallas, Texas and spent the growing up years of his life in the suburbs of the Lone Star states third largest city. With after school options in his neighborhood being to play hoops or create trouble Dorrough went with basketball. While attending the uniform-wearing Lancaster High School his hours on the courts paid off and he played basketball as the Tigers team captain. Dorwin became involved with music initially by distributing mixtapes during basketball games that he made for fun. Recognition of the appeal of his work began with his music being played as his high school basketball team ran out on the court. After graduating high school he went on to attend Prairie View A&M University, part of the Texas A&M University System, in the greater Houston area. He started college with the idea that basketball would be his way to fame and fortune but rapping may be what gets him there. His name may someday appear with other Prairie View A&M University's famous musical alumnus which includes Terry Ellis of the R&B group En Vogue, Dewey Redman, DJ Premier of Gang Starr, and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's legendary Blues artist Charles Brown.
Getting his music out there
Prime Time Click, which Dorrough was a member of, recorded Do Tha Muscle one semester and it quickly became a hit on campus and Dallas radio. Shortly afterward he independently released Halle Berry which gained popularity equally as fast. Students took the tunes with them to their hometowns and word of mouth built Dorrough a grass roots fan base in the states of Louisiana and Oklahoma in addition to Dallas, Houston and San Antonio, over the course of a summer break.
Breaking into the charts
Building on his red-hot popularity and demonstrating his understanding of striking while the iron is hot Dorrough signed with indi label E1 Music and released his first single, Walk That Walk, on April 7, 2009. The song peaked at #12 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Rap Chart.
When the second single from the album was released, Ice Cream Paint Job, it peaked at #27 on the Billboard Hot 100 and digital sales passed 500,000 units in September making it Dorrough's first Gold.
The Dallas rapper released his first studio album, Dorrough Music, on August 4, 2009 and watched it debut at number 2 on Top Rap Albums, number 6 on Top R&B / Hip-Hop Albums and number 36 on Billboard 200. Album sales quickly passed 25,000 copies and continue to climb.
The first iTunes remix released on August 11, 2009 features Soulja Boy Tell Em, Rich Boy, Slim Thug, Jermaine Dupri, Jim Jones and E-40. The second remix, called G-funk, includes the same artists with the addition of Snoop Dogg and Nipsey Hussle was released on September 22 through iTunes.
