“I think that everybody should be an entrepreneur so that they can be pushed to do their own thing and that there's nobody over them telling them what to do and how to be, but rather they’re following the scriptures and becoming their own unique and special person.”

Donald Lawrence was interested in music throughout his entire life. After immersing himself in it whenever the opportunity presented itself, he began to study it in school. He eventually earned a Bachelor of the Fine Arts Degree for Musical Studies at the Cincinnati Conservatory in Ohio. While attending college in Cincinnati he also served as the Musical Minister for the Southern Baptist Church on Reading Road.
Starting Out
Lawrence had a number of different jobs in the music industry throughout his career. He started out as the music director of the Tri-City Singers when his friend gave up the position in the early nineties. The group took its name from the three different cities it drew its thirty five members form (Gastonia and Charlotte in North Carolina as well as Spartanburg, South Carolina.)
Tri City Singers
The Tri-City Singers signed with the new record label, GospoCentric Records, and debuted in 1993 with the album A Songwriter’s Point of View. The album was a success climbing all the way to #2 on the Billboard Gospel charts at the time featuring hits such like I Am God, Stranger, and A Message for the Saints.
In 1995 the group released their follow up record, Bible Stories, under the new label Crystal Rose Records under Sparrow Records. The album was released under the new name of Donald Lawrence & The Tri-City Singers. Another album followed in the holiday season of the same year titled Hello Christmas.
Years later in 2000 the group released a follow up album tri-city4.com that again shot to the Billboard Gospel #2 spot. The album was led to the top of the charts by the singles Testify and God’s Favor. God’s Favor featured many cameo performances from artists like Kim Burrell and Kelly Price.
Only a year later the next album was released titled Go Get Your Life Back. The following year another album was released, this time a Greatest hits compilation, Restoring the Years. This greatest hits celebration CD also featured two new tracks as well.
Time to Go Solo
In 2004 Donald Lawrence decided to go it alone for his debut single album I Speak Life. Although he decided to break out on his own from this album, it was not without many contributions from previous members of the Tri-City Singers. This album was released by the label Verity Records under Quiet Water Entertainment. The album got Lawrence a total of 7 nominations and 6 wins at the Stellar Awards.
In 2006 the Tri-City Singers decided to retire after one final live recording that was released in two volumes in April, Finale: Act One and Finale: Act Two. The album was a huge success of combo CD and DVD with tons of guest performances and surprises. In February of 2009 Lawrence released his second solo album The Law of Confession Part I. He is currently working on additional projects as well as the anticipated follow up The Law of Confession Part II.
