The Early Recording


Dido was born in Kensington, London, on Christmas day in 1971. Her mother was a French poet and her father was of Irish descent. In fact Dido's older brother Rollo is the renowned DJ and producer from electronica group Faithless. Dido was always interested in music right from the early years. After leaving college where she was studying law, Dido recorded a demo and was signed to a management company called Nettwerk. She first started out recording tracks for her brothers project Faithless. The management company was keen to see Dido establish herself. As the company managed Sarah McLachlan they were able to find a slot on the Lilith Fair tour. Dido by then had managed to record an entire solo album called "No Angel" but the management company delayed the release. Dido toured all across America and even played her biggest single "Thank You" much before it was sampled by Eminem.


The Eminem Connection


In 2000, Dido received an unexpected package from Eminem which was the single "Stan" with her Thank You song sampling asking permission to use it. There are many urban legends on how Eminem heard the song and sampled the track. Dido not only gave the permission but starred in the video "Stan" as the pregnant girlfriend of the protagonist. The strange thing was that Dido had written the song as a break-up with her boyfriend but Eminem had been able to transform it into something bigger. The song was a mega hit and debut at No.1. The interest in Dido soared; the media and music fans were waited in much anticipation about her own album.


Dido has frequently thanked Eminem for his part in introducing her to America. The management company sensing the global attention released "No Angel" in 2001, and the first single was obviously "Thank You". The album was a massive hit. Upon release it soared to No.1 on billboard and became the biggest selling album for 2001. The second single "Here with Me" was also a massive hit. It was featured in the British movie Love Actually. The album has thus far sold over 21 million copies making it one of the biggest solo debut's of all times. Dido's first tour of playing theaters and arenas was a sell-out in America and Europe. Dido also became an unexpected fashion icon when her hairstyle was being widely emulated called the Dido flip.


The Sophomore


Dido and her record label were quite anxious on the eve of her second album. The album "Life for Rent" was released in 2003 and went on to be the fastest selling album on UK chart history. The album confirmed Dido's superstar status and the fact that her first album was no fluke. The music from the album was somber and very reflective of her own personal trials and tribulations. The first single "White Flag" was a hit. The song was about personal life and emotional strain it causes. Several of the songs dealt with her personal life, her search for inner peace, her friendships and failure at relationships.


Dido was able to lay bear her raw emotions in her music which sometimes got mixed reviews. The album has gone on to sell over 7 million albums world wide. The tour was another success and Dido played to a new set of fans. The DVD "Live at Brixton Academy" showcasing her talent. The DVD was another success. In 2005, Dido performed at the global event Live 8 in three different cities as per the organizers request. She played at Hyde Park in London, Cornwall and flew to Paris to play with African singer Youssou N'Dour


The New Direction


In 2008, he released "Safe Direction Home". The album took nearly three years to complete and had many collaborations including Brian Eno and Mick Fleetwood. The album did not sell like her two previous records. The album was considered a sad tribute to her personal loss of her father.


In 2010 it has been widely reported and confirmed by Dido that she will launch a new album and tour. Dido is one of the bright hopes of the future and her songwriting which even won her the prestigious Ivor Novello award.
