Destiny Fulfilled

The paradox for Destiny's Child has always been the fact that people will regarded the band as a launching pad for the inevitable solo career for Beyonce. The band dissolved at the height of their magic and popularity something has never been quite understood. Yet they remain the most successful all girl groups of all times. The RnB and Hip Hop music along with soul sensibilities gave them the perfect sound to launch the well choreographed and fun and sexy image of the band.

Their music has had its critical moments, but it was always a purely commercial group. They have released 4 studio albums and sold over 50 million copies world wide. They won various accolades from Grammy and Billboard awards as well as recognition from the World's Music Awards as the Best-selling female group of all times. Their high value video and live show production changed the music business. The group has toured extensively playing sell out shows all across the world. More importantly Destiny's Child inspired young up coming artists like Alicia Keys and all girl group Pussycat Dolls.

Destiny Begins

The band was started when Kelly Rowland moved into the Knowles family home during 1990 and along with Beyonce Knowles and LaTavia Robertson they started rehearsing together. The group was known as Girltyme, also including Latoya Luckett. It was not until Mathew Knowles, Beyonce's father started to mentor the group when things began to change. He used to train them in singing and choreography in a school type environment.

After a lot of financial problems, the group managed to sign with Columbia Records in 1997 and started calling themselves Destiny's Child. They started recording their self titled first album and released it in 1998. It was a moderate success. The single "No No No" sold a million copies.

The band moved back into the studio record a follow-up; "The Writing's On the Wall" was released in July 1999 and quickly became their US breakthrough. It debut at No.5 on the US album charts largely due to the strength of their first single "Bills Bills Bills". The single reached the summit on the Hot 100 charts. But the song "Say my Name" became an international chart buster which remained on top of the US charts for three weeks. The album eventually sold an astonishing 8 million copies.

Internal Battles

Trouble started when Luckett and Robertson wanted to split from Mathew Knowles as they found his management style always favoring his daughter. When the video of "Say My Name" appeared it shocked them as they realized that they were replaced by two new singers. Now the group included Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin.

Luckett and Robertson immediately sued Mathew Williams and the band. The lawsuit was dropped as a settlement was reached. Franklin left the group due to various reasons.

Pop Culture Phenomena

Now a three-piece band they recorded the smash hit "Independent Women" for the Charlie's Angel soundtrack. The song stayed on top of US charts for 11 weeks. In 2001 they swept the Billboard awards winning 5 trophies. The third album "Survivor" debut at No.1 on the US charts and the title single was another smash. The album went to sell 4 million copies in the US alone. They even won two Grammies for "Say my Name". The Survivor Tour was also a commercial success cementing their superstar status

The members took time off to focus on their individual careers resulting in massive success to Rowland and Knowles.

In 2003, Mathew Knowles announced that Solange Knowles would join Destiny's Child. Though that eventually did not happen; they did release one more album in 2004 "Destiny Fulfilled "reaching no.2 on the US Album charts. Four singles released from the album peaked in the Top 10 of US singles chart. The ensuing global tour was the last as they announced the disbanding of the band.

The Greatest Hits package titled "#1s" and a concert DVD "Destiny's Child: Live in Atlanta" was released in 2005.

Focusing on solo careers, Beyonce Knowles has of course been the break out international superstar among the three. Destiny's Child will always remain a hugely popular and a commercial juggernaut.
