Dark Lotus
Nothing on 'The Opaque Brotherhood' [third album from Dark Lotus] will convince anyone who isn't already a fan, but the tormented lyrics and matter-of-fact delivery remove a layer or two of distance and artifice from the band's familiar themes, and make them that much more disturbing as a result.
Coming Together
In 1998, two hip hop groups on the Psychopathic Record label, Twiztid and Insane Clown Posse, along with rapper Chris Rouleau, came together to form the supergroup, Dark Lotus. Neither group ceased to record on their own, but rather treated this as a side project. The group released their debut single, Echo Side in 1999, which was included on the Insane Clown Posse's album, The Amazing Jeckel Brothers.
After the release of the single, the group decided they needed to add a sixth member. They wanted each member to represent one petal of the lotus flower. They ultimately added Marz, a rapper who had also spent time with the industrial metal band, Ministry. They released their first album, Tales from the Lotus Pod, in 2001, at the second annual Gathering of the Juggalos. Juggalos are fans of Insane Clown Posse, and the gathering is an annual festival. The album peaked at #1 on the Billboard heatseeker chart and at #6 on the indie charts.
Its Own Identity
Marz left the group after the release, and was replaced with Detroit rapper, Anybody Killa (ABK). They released their second studio album, Black Rain, in 2004. It peaked at #3 on the Billboard indie chart, and at #71 on the Billboard Top 200. Because each group and artist brought with them their own fan base, their material was wildly popular, and digital sales on Black Rain were extremely robust. Itunes and the official website offered mp3 dowloads and ringtones, as well as video and audio streaming. Dark Lotus went on a US tour to promote the album.
In 2006, ABK left Psychopathic Records and Dark Lotus. Later that year, the group announced that they would not replace him and continue with five members. They continued to perform at Juggalo gatherings, concerts, and festivals, building an enormous fan base. In 2008, their third studio album, The Opaque Brotherhood, was the first to appear on the Billboard R&B/rap chart, and it peaked at #1.
Here and Now
Dark Lotus toured and performed to frenzied crowds across the country in 2008 and 2009. Demand for their downloads and merchandise remain stellar. Each individual band and artist is currently focusing on their own material right now, but Dark Lotus is expected to perform together at the next Gathering of Juggalos.
Did you know . . .
After Marz left the group, Tales From the Lotus Pod was remixed with all of his vocals removed and replaced with those of ABK. The album was re-released, and the others were pulled from the shelves.
The group recorded an EP that was only made available at their concerts during their 2008/2009 tour.
Dark Lotus contributed to the soundtrack for the video game, Backyard Wrestling.
