Danzig

I just told you I wasn’t a Satanist.

City of New Jersey

The group that would be later known as Danzig, was formed in the city of Lodi, New Jersey although they got their start under many other names. The group was formed from an earlier group known as The Misfits, who saw very little success mainly due to the fact that absolutely no one could get along with each other.

However, after forming another group, Glenn Danzig was discovered one night playing in a bar by the record company Def Jam and would eventually sign with the company to go on and become one of the leading heavy metal artists of all time.

First Albums

Glenn Danzig was not unfamiliar with the release of albums and writing songs, however, up until 1987, his albums had mostly been failures just as his bands. His luck was about to change when he was playing his last show with his current band when he was discovered by Rick Rubin, the creator of Def Jam records.

The group would come together and release their full length studio album called Danzig that would feature a different style other than their hard and heavy earlier albums that Glenn was known for. The group would go on to release another album in 1990 called Danzig II: Lucifuge. This album would begin to have more of what the group is known for today, which is the heavy metal tone and hard hitting power chords.

The group would go on to release a few more albums with little play time other than heavy metal specialty stations.

The Breakthrough

The album called Thrall: Demonsweatlive, which would have the hit song Mother that would get air play on many rock n’ roll stations across the country. The song was made into a music video and began to get play time on MTV as well. With this new found exposure came the religious right and they would begin to accuse Glenn of Satanism. Interestingly, this was welcomed by Glenn for the simple fact that the more accusations that were made, the more free publicity he received.

Eventually, he would go on to denounce any practice or involvement with Satanism or the occult although he would say that he thought the figure Lucifer was an interesting individual concerning his portrayal in Christian literature. The release of the album Danzig 4 would also go on to have one single that would chart, which was called Can’t Speak. The song would not gain nearly the acclaim as Mother but would enjoy play time on MTV. In 1994, Danzig would leave the Rubin record label and would find themselves losing interest in their projects.

The group would go on to release many more albums with changing sounds on each one. Although the group had not had a hit single in many years, it had gathered a solid fan base and would continue to sell records. They have experimented with many different sounds although none would impress fans as their earlier works did. In 2004, the group would release the album called Circle of Snakes. This would rejuvenate fans across the world as a return to the roots of the group. The album was more like their earlier works that would take them back to the genre and style of heavy metal. They would go on tour to support the album and gain many new fans from this tour.

Eventually, the group as well as Glenn would grow weary from the road and have settled on playing much smaller venues as well as a shorter touring cycle. More information can be found on the band’s web site as well as information on upcoming tour dates as well as prospects for new releases. Some of the group’s music may be available as free music downloads on the internet or for simple screening.
