Danity Kane

I would definitely say that there's really no best singer of the group. We're all really great singers in all of our own right, we all have very different styles. I don't really feel any pressure, I don't think that any of us do. We love to sing. If you love something, it shows. I sing, and what comes out, comes out.

The Early Days

In 2004, Sean “Diddy” Combs hosted  Making the Band 3, a television series devoted to searching for talent to form a female super group each season.  As the show progressed, and there were seven contestants remaining, Combs found he was not happy with the talent available and chose not to form the group at all.  He granted a reprieve to three contestants, including Aubrey O'Day and Aundrea Fimbres, who returned for the next season.  By the end of the season, the group included O'Day, Fimbres, “D. Woods” Woodgette, Shannon Bex, and Dawn Richard.

In 2006, they released their debut album, Danity Kane, on the Bad Boys Record label, with Sean Combs as executive producer.  The album sold 90,000 copies in the first day and 234,662 in the first week.  To date, over 2 million copies have been sold, certifying platinum.  The album climbed to #1 on the Billboard Top 200.

Building a Career

During 2006 and 2007, Danity Kane opened for Christina Aguilera during part of the United States leg of her Back to Basics Tour.  Also during 2006, the group won the Urban Music Award for Best Group – Female.

Danity Kane released their second album, Welcome to the Dollhouse, in 2008.  The album was recorded in five weeks, while the group was filming Making of the Band 4.  The album debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200.  The album certified gold in less than a month, and spawned their most successful single, Damaged.  Soundscan reports that the single sold over 2,000,000 digital downloads.  Following the release, Danity Kane embarked on Making of the Band 4 – The Tour.

Disbandment

Despite plans for a third album and various endorsements in the works, it was announced in January of 2009, that the band was splitting up.  Combs had invited the group to return for the 2009 season of Making of the Band, and only two members, Richard and Fimbres, showed Individual members seemed confused about what the other members were thinking and doing.

In 2009, MTV aired a special titled The Rise and Fall of Danity Kane, showcasing the rise and fall of the group.  During their short career, Danity Kane was nominated for thirteen awards, including MTV Music Awards, Online Hip Hop Awards, Teen Chioce Awards, three nominations from Starship Magazine.  They won an Urban Music Award in 2006 and two Online Hip Hop Awards in 2008.
