Dane Cook - an astute observer of life

"I just want to be in that world."  Dane Cook

Comedy has been Dane Cook's "thing" since he was a teenager.  As a seventh grader he set his sights on being on the Saturday Night Live show.  On December 3, 2005, Cook conclusively achieved his aspiration. His Saturday Night Live appearance as guest host rated as one of the 2005 most watched episodes of the SNL season which included a historically long monologue with a handheld microphone.  Cooks kinetic energy transfers well on film as well as through comedy.

Dane Cook - The Growing Up Years

Dane Jeffrey Cook was born on March 18, 1972 in Cambridge, Massachusetts but grew up in nearby Arlington.  Raised in a large family of eight by working class parents that each had their own unique style of humor Dane became a sharp observer of life and how differently people choose to handle it.  Cook has admitted in interviews that his onstage persona is a blend of his parent’s styles of humor.  While attending Arlington High School he went to Stoney Point often where Michael Anderson mentored him in his acting skills.

Building up steam

Beginning his stand-up comedy career in 1990 at age 18 he became a local favorite and then branched out to Boston and other larger urban areas.  Dane Cook made a couple of quick moves in the mid-1990's that lead to greater exposure each time. His first move from Massachusetts to New York City in 1994 lead to the beginning of his acting career which began in 1995 when Dane appeared in five episodes an ABC’s series called Maybe This Time with Betty White and Marie Osmond. A year later he traded coasts and moved to Los Angeles and began working the comedy clubs like the Laugh Factory and Comedy Central.  After only two years in the L.A. clubs he made a serious break into mainstream stand-up comedy with an appearance on Comedy Central’s Premium Blend.  1999 marked his first foray into films with a minor role as the superhero “The Waffler” in Mystery Men and a starring role in the video movie Simon Sez as Nick Miranda.   His 2000 Comedy Central Presents thirty minute special established a relationship with the cable company that continued for years and helped establish his name in the comedy world throughout America.

In an uncommon move to further his career Cook invested $25,000 into his own interactive domain, DaneCook.com, which he continues to use to stay closely connected to fans.  The effectiveness of this, and his MySpace account, was proven when the 2,500 to 5,000 seats at The Theater at Madison Square Garden were sold out for three of his shows with the only press being that posted on his website.

Making the charts

With the release of his first CD/DVD, Harmful If Swallowed, in 2003 Comedy Central Records signed him to a four record deal.  Although that album went platinum it was his second album, Retaliation, that placed his name among the best-selling comedians like Bill Cosby and George Carlen when it ranked #4 on Billboard charts in 2005.  The double platinum recording was the first comic CD to make that rank in 29 years.  Rough Around the Edges came out in 2007 and continued his charting streak when it took #1 on Billboard’s Top Comedy Albums. His fourth album, ISolated INcident, was released May 19, 2009 and matched the chart ranking earned by Retaliation in 2005.

Cook’s observational humor covers incidents in fast food establishments to corny geek oddities.  Known for creating new slang, popularizing inventive gestures and sometimes outrageous behavior Cook is widely popular but has received criticism from others concerning the source of some of his material and a few of his antics. Nevertheless, Dane Cook continues to broaden his fan base with sold out comedy shows and ever larger acting roles.  He has appeared with stars that include Jessica Simpson, Kevin Costner, Dan Fogler and Jessica Alba.
