Group’s Formation
The group actually formed from the fusing of another two rock groups called Farewell Unknown and Ghostrunner on Third and would join together to form the rock n’ roll alternative group Dance Gavin Dance. The member Will Swan began to recruit member for the group while others from these two bands would go on to join other groups such as Mozart Season. Eventually, Johnny Craig and Sean O’Sullivan would join the group in early 2005 to complete a full rock n’ roll ensemble.
The group Dance Gavin Dance was created by Craig to form another alternative indie rock group after his other group broke it off. The group would release its first demo EP in November of 2006 called Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean on the record label Rise Records.
After the group went on a local tour in support of the EP around their local bars and clubs, they decided to return back in to the studio to produce their first full length set called Downtown Battle Mountain, which was released on May 15, 2007. The album got some attention from local critics and has gained some attention from fans over the last couple of years.
Trouble On the Horizon
After the release of Downtown Battle Mountain, the group would experience some internal difficulties as the lead guitarist Sean O’Sullivan would drop away from the group wanting to pursue his own career and also from some heated disputes with founder Johnny Craig. O’Sullivan would eventually go on to sign with the band Consider the Thief. Dance Gavin Dance would replace O’Sullivan with Zac Garren.
Ironically, in November of 2007, Johnny Craig would also leave the band due to personal disputes with the rest of the group and many find this very interesting because Craig is the one who founded the group in the first place. He would go on to fill in for the group A Skylit Drive as lead vocals to relieve them temporarily. He has now created a solo career for himself and has signed with Rise Records to pursue said career.
The Band Stays Together
With some debate over whether or not the group would hold it together after the departure of the founding father, they would go on to hire Kurt Travis as their lead singer who had performed for many other up and coming groups of the time. With this new member and everyone is somewhat of an agreement on where they were heading, the group would go on to try and release another album. They would go on to release their self titled album that would be released in August of 2008.
The album was named by SmartPunk.com as the SmartPick of the month and the website would go on to stream the album for the entire month of August giving the band the much needed exposure that they desired. Some have said the album singles were also available as free music downloads. After the album was finished, original members Jonathen Mess and Eric Lodge would leave Dance Gavin Dance with no real reason that has ever been listed.
The group would go on to experience many similar struggles with different members leaving the band here and there. They would go on the Warped Tour in 2009 in support of their albums. Fans can find more information on the group’s official web site including up coming tour dates and the most recent news about album releases and what is in the works.
