Caribbean Born
The son of one of the most, if not the most famous reggae musicians in the world, Damian Marley would follow in his father’s footsteps to be one of the up and coming reggae artists of the day. He would release his first album in 1996 and never look back while taking the reggae world by storm. He is not known for explicit lyrics of sexually deviant content but more or less for his general love of mankind and the desire for peace throughout the world.
Career Start
Only two years old when Bob Marley, his father, died he would be eventually dubbed Junior Gong, which is homage from his father’s nickname of Tuff Gong. He would start performing at the very young age of thirteen years old and is like almost everyone else in his family in the fact that they all are musicians of some sort or another.
He would release his debut album in the year of 1996 that was called Mr. Marley although it would not gain much acclaim possibly due to his young age and being held to a much higher standard coming from the greatest reggae artist of all time. His next album called Halfway Tree was released in 2001 and would be his breakthrough album as an artist.
The record would win him the Grammy Award under the category of Best Reggae Album. He would tour for this album and then go back to the studio to release his third full length album called Welcome to Jamrock that would be released in September of 2005. The album was largely centered on a political message that spoke out against poverty and inner city violence.
It was said to spread the message of hope to all who are enveloped in that type of existence as well as send a message to the communities that only they can make the changes necessary to bring people out of poverty and grant them an education. The album would win Damian Marley another Grammy Award in 2006 and would solidify his position in the music world and signify that he would become a major player in the music community.
Touring and Performances
Like his brothers and sisters, Damian Marley would be an extensive touring artist. He would go from city to city spouting his lyrics to the delight of his many fans. In 2004, he would hit the road with his brothers and sisters Ziggy, Julian, Stephan, and Ky-Mani and travel throughout the United States on what was called the Bob Marley Roots, Rock, Reggae Festival Tour.
This touring with the family is not uncommon and they have a solid relationship with one another, which allows them to travel as a family. Along with his extensive touring, he would also collaborate with many other rap artists of the day such as Cypress Hill who he recorded a song with called Ganja Bus. Not only has he worked with groups like Cypress Hill, but has also worked with solo acts such as the legendary Snoop Dogg and Gwen Stefani.
He has also worked with more rock n’ roll and folk musicians such as Ben Harper when he toured as a supporting act with him in 2006. He would also perform at the new festival called Bonnarroo in 2006.
