Daft Punk– Electro House Super Stars
“We don't believe in the star system. We want the focus to be on the music. If we have to create an image, it must be an artificial image. That combination hides our physicality and also shows our view of the star system. It is not a compromise” - Thomas Bangalter
Band Formation
Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo became friends in 1987 while still in school in Paris and formed a guitar based band and even recorded demos. Though they even performed gigs in the UK but somehow it did not seem right. They received negative press from their performances in the UK which also included a drummer. They were called “a bunch of Daft Punk” by the Melody Maker magazine. After the breakup the duo formed an electronic sound based on synth and drum machine.
In 1993 they went to a race party at Euro Disney and met Stuart Macmillan who was the cofounder of the music label Some Quality Recordings. The meeting led to the release of Daft Punk’s first single in 1994 called “the New Wave”. They released in May ’95 the second single “Da Funk”. The single was a commercial success in France reaching No.7 on the singles chart but it also managed to go all the way to No.1 on the US Dance play charts. The surprise success leads to a record deal with Virgin Records and they also signed on with a manager.
The Debut Album
The band went on an extensive recording session to release “Watermark” their debut album in 1997. The album was an amalgamation of different style of techno, rave, house and synth music. It has often been acknowledged by one of the most influential dance albums of the Nineties. The single “Da Funk” was also featured on The Saint Movie soundtrack. Daft Punk also released “Around the World” which was a hugely successful single.
The Sophomore
Daft Punk released their second album “Discovery” in 2001 which peaked at No.44 on the US Billboard charts. The album was a major hit in France where it has sold 3 million copies. The success of the album was largely due to the international hit “One More Time” which was their third No.1 US Dance play hit. The single “Face to Face” was their fourth US No.1 Dance hit.
Human After All
The band released their third album “Human After All” in 2005. The album featured hit single “Robot Rock” and three other singles which all charted. The album was not as big a hit as their second album but still managed to reach No.1 on the US Electronic album chart.
The band went on a hugely successful Alive 2007 tour which culminated into the DVD release as well. Daft Punk has always shied away from interviews and videos, always maintaining a shroud of secrecy around them. A new album has been rumored in 2010.
