Da Brat

Where my bitches at? Where all my bitches at…

Blowing from the Windy City

Born in the city of Chicago Illinois, the rapper that would go on to be known as Da Brat would get her start as Shawntae Harris, which was her birth name. She would start her musical training very early in life when she began to play drums as well as sing in her church choir. She would attend the Kenwood Academy High School in the late 1980’s and would prove herself to be quite talented as an athlete as well. Music would be her passion in life and she would pursue a career later after she graduated high school.

Rapping It Up

Harris would go on to enter a rap contest in 1992 that was sponsored by Yo MTV Raps. This would prove to be her big break as she would win first prize as well as meeting the young performers called Kris Kross who would turn her demo over to their producer. It is said that from this producer she would be turned into somewhat of a female Snoop Dogg. In the year of 1994, Da Brat would produce her first full length studio album called Funkdafied and the record would immediately debut at number one on the albums charts under the rap category.

The album would generate sales that would be unmatched by any other female rapper and from the record she would be the first female solo act in that category to sell one million albums. This would make the record platinum and she would subsequently release singles off of the album that would make it to the Billboard Hot 100. The single Funkdafied would climb to the number one position on the charts and the second single release would be called Give It 2 You, which would make it to the number twenty six position on the Billboard Hot 100 as well. During this time, Harris’ career was gaining steam and her music career would start to take off.

Gaining Ground

In the late 1990’s, Da Brat had established herself as one of the top female rappers and would have the attention of practically everyone in the rap community. During this time she would also appear in a few movies such as Shaquille O’Neal’s Kazaam. She would also be doing much collaboration with other artists in the industry such as Lil’ Kim, Left Eye, and many other male and female rappers of the time. She would later be featured on an album by Missy Elliot as well as Krayzie Bone when she would help create remix of Mariah Carey’s song I Still Believe. Eventually in early 2000, she would create her third full length album called Unrestricted but would not be a producer as her earlier albums.

She would go on to create a video for the song called What Chu Like that would show Harris and another rolling on the beach barely clothed. Although she was not experiencing the type of stardom that she would with her earlier albums, she would continue to work with others on remix singles with artists such as Bow Wow and Jermaine Dupri. She would complete a remix of the song called I Think They Like Me, which would make it to the number one position on the Billboard Hot R&B Hip Hop Singles charts.
