DJ Quik
I'm 14 years in the game, ... There's some kids that weren't even born when my first album came out. I wanted to draw a timeline between my old stuff and my new stuff and bridge it to where there's a level of continuity.
Starting Young
David Marvin Blake, known by his stage name, DJ Quik, was given a turntable for his ninth grade graduation. He began selling homemade mixtapes and giving DJ performances in Southern California. In 1990, Profile Records offered him a recording contract. He started recording for others in 1991. Among his first production clients include 2nd II None, AMG, and Hi-C.
His debut album, Quik is the Name, was released in 1991 and was preceded by the singles, Tonite and Born and Raised in Compton, both of which appeared in the Top 20 R&B charts. The album peaked at #10 on the Billboard Top 200 and ultimately certified platinum. It would prove to be his most successful album.
A Prolific Career
In 1992, DJ Quik released his second album, Way 2 Fonky. The title track was a response to rival rapper Tim Dog's challenge against Compton. The album peaked at #20 on the Billboard Top 200. He released three more albums before 2002. After the lackluster sales of the fifth album, Arista Records (who had bought Profile Records) dropped him from the label. He recorded his 2005 album, Trauma, independently on his own label, Mad Science Recordings.
In 2006, DJ Quik collaborated with fellow Compton rapper, AMG, to form The Fixxers. They recorded two albums: 2007's Midnight Life and 2008's Street Masterpiece. Their single, Can You Werk Wit Dat? was declared #22 on Vibe's 44 Best Songs of 2007, and was featured on the HBO television show, Entourage. The two toured together in 2007 as part of the Ball 4 Real Streetball Tour.
Here and Now
In 2009, DJ Quik collaborated with rapper Kurupt to record and release the album, BlaQKout. The two had known each other for years, and Quik saw this as an opportunity to produce an album with a good friend. The album peaked at #61 on the Billboard Top 200, and sold 8,800 copies in the first wee of release.
DJ Quik's next solo album, The Book of David, is due out some time in 2010. The first single Nobody F. Suga Free is available on line for download now. His most recent acting project is that of a piano player in the film, Malice N Wonderland. He also has multiple album productions in process, for such artists as Kurupt, Game, Xzibit, Suga Free, and Danny Boy.
