Born to Fred and Catrine Lauper, Cyndi Lauper would go on to be an award winning singer and actor in the twentieth and twenty first century. Her music would be heralded by millions of fan world wide and become an inspiration of many up and coming singers. Her parents would divorce when she was five years old and her mother would become a waitress to support the family. During this time, Lauper has said she started to listen to music by Judy Garland and Ella Fitzgerald.
It was also then that she started to create her own lyrics as a way to express herself. She would begin to stand out among her peers at school by wearing exuberant clothing and dying her hair. She would be accepted to a public institution for the arts although she would not make it through and would drop out rather quickly working various odd jobs as she pursued a career in music.
Career Start
She would begin her career by joining various bands and singing covers from groups such as Jefferson Airplane and Led Zeppelin but again would not be happy as she wanted to perform her own music. She would eventually meet sax player John Turi and the two of them would form the band called Blue Angel.
They would create a demo and miraculously the tape would make its way into the hands of Steve Massarsky, the manager of The Allman Brothers. He decided that the two were worth taking a chance on and would try and sign Lauper as a solo act but she would not leave John behind. Finally, in 1980 the two would be signed to Polydor records and produce their first album together.
The album was self titled and sold poorly although it got very good reviews by music critics in general. The group would also get into a lawsuit with their former manager and producer and would later be sued for eighty thousand dollars, which would force Lauper into working at a retail clothing store because the lawsuit forced her into bankruptcy.
Solo Career and Big Break
Finally in 1983 all of Cyndi Lauper’s hard work and dedication paid off with the release of the single She’s So Unusual. The song would not only be popular in the United States but reach audiences across the Atlantic as well. Her punk rock image and style of dress would make her popular with the younger crowd, which would also lead to her success with both the young and old. She would release two songs later in the 1980’s in which she is still known for today.
One, Girls Just Want To Have Fun would go onto be one of the greatest hits of all time and is still in production in many movies of the present. It also still generates airplay on 1980’s rock n roll stations as well. Her other hit singe was called Time After Time. The song would rocket to number one on charts across the globe and give Lauper the stardom that she strived so hard to achieve. The album would become multiple times platinum. The songs would be also featured on many movies of that time as well.
After this success, she would go on to create additional albums that would do very well although none were quite the hits as these singles from that album. She would go on to participate in many charitable organizations championing many different causes and organizations.
She has been considered a grateful artist by most people in the music industry and is beloved by millions of fans across the world still to this day. One may find some of her music available as free music downloads or at minimum available for internet screening.
