We've all just really been enjoying the hell out of it, and enjoying meeting all the fans, and going to different cities. Of course, money's always an issue, but hopefully, in the future, that won't be too much of one.
Getting Started
In 1999, singer and bassist Ed Sloan, backing vocalist Mitch James, and drummer Brian Geiger got together and formed the trio, The Nothing. In 2002, as Crossfade, they added singer and DJ Tony Byroads. Performing in local venues around their hometown of Columbia, South Carolina, their post-grunge sound attracted the attention of the Earshot division of Columbia Records.
In 2004, the band released their first album, simply entitled Crossfade. The album peaked at #41 on the Billboard Top 200, and #1 on Billboard Heatseekers. Three singles were released: Cold, So Far Away, and Colors. All three singles enjoyed frequent radio play and charted on the US Modern Rock and US Maiinstream Rock charts.
Creating a Niche
By the end of 2005, Crossfade had sold 1.1 million copies and certified platinum. The success of the album is due, in part, to the band's aggressive touring in support of the recording. A remix of the hit, Cold, hit the internet; the remix featured a hip hop rhythm, sped up vocals, and a guest appearance from rapper, Ms. 86. The track is available on line for mp3 download.
Crossfade released their second album, Falling Away, in 2006. This album was produced without Tony Byroads, who left the band in 2005. While it did not enjoy the success its predecessor had, the album sold over 200,000 copies and certified gold. Three singles were released from this album, including Drown You Out, which featured a guest appearance from Sahaj Ticotin from the band, Ra.
Here and Now
Crossfade is currently touring the United States with Saliva, and, for select dates, Three Days Grace and Buckcherry. Their newest album is in the works and is due out some time in 2010. The first single, We All Bleed, was released for streaming at their MySpace page and is now available for download at iTunes. They have released via twitter the names of two additional tracks to be included: Suffocate and Lay Me Down.
The band has been through some roster changes over the years. Byroads left the band in 2005, as did drummer Brian Geiger. Instead of bringing in a new lead singer, the band made Ed Sloan their new vocalist, and recruited Les Hall for guitars and keyboards; they also added James Branham as their new drummer.
Did you know . . .
There is another band named Crossfade. They are from Sweden, and their most popular album is White on Blue.
Crossfade's first album was released with all vulgarity censored. The label did not have the money to release a censored and a non-censored version, and the band needed mainstream sales, so they censored their own album.
For a short time, between calling themselves The Nothing and changing their name to Crossfade, the band was known as the Sugardaddy Superstars.
