Cobra Starship - Desert Stars And Talking Cobras

"I dig their attitude. ... They've got a very 21st-century outlook. They don't take themselves too seriously. They're there to have a party, put on a good show. That, to me, is the kind of band you want to tour with."

When Gabe Saporta's desert vision led him to the side-project named Cobra Starship he didn't know their first release Bring it (Snakes on a Plane) would end up on the soundtrack to the box office hit movie Snakes on a Plane.

Cobra Starship - The Beginnings

In 2005, Gabe Saporta brought Ryland Blackinton, Alex Suarez, Elisa Schwartz, and Nate Novarro together to form Cobra Starship as a side project while he was the bassist/vocalist with Midtown. Their band was named by melding Saporta's desert mantra that he had written on the back of one of his jackets. Starting out in New York City's pop punk and new wave scene they soon expanded their musical style to include a wide variety of genre's including most of the Alternative Dance-rock sounds blending wildly with the Synthpop style.

Their first single Snakes on a Plane (Bring It), from the movie soundtrack, was released during the summer of 2006 and it topped the US Alternative Chart at 32. Cobra Starship signed with Fueled by Ramen/Decaydance during that same year. "They toured with Gym Class Heroes during the fall waiting for their freshman album While the City Sleeps, We Rule the Streets to be released. It was released in October 2006, with the single by that name going to #1 on the US Heatseekers Chart and #7 on the US Indie Chart.

Making it to the Gesture Scene

In 2007 Elisa Schwartz left Cobra Starship and Victoria Asher, aka Vicky-T, came in with the key-tar, the video/single Send My Love to the Dance Floor, I'll See you in Hell Hey Mr. DJ) had a summer release, and their sophomore album, -Viva La Cobra!, produced by Patrick Stump, was released in October. The phrase 'throw your fangs up" with two fingers of the right hand bent over the left hand's open palm gesture was coined by Cobra during this time period. In 2008 single Kiss My Sass was their only release and it didn't register in any of the charts.

In 2009, Cobra Starship went to a cabin in the woods to try and get it together for their next album. They kept in touch with their fans through a live camera feed. Pete Wentz is the Only Reason We're Famous single was posted on their MySpace page during this time. They teamed up with Leighton Meester for Good Girls Go Bad which was released on ITunes in May. It peaked at #7 on Billboard Hot 100. The video premiered on MTV in June and was nominated for Best Direction and Best Pop video VMA's.

Hot Mess was produced by Kevin Rudolf and released during August, 2009 featuring artist guests B.O.B. and Cassadee Pope, also on the Decaydance and Fueled By Ramen label. This album made ratings around the world; #4 in the US, #14 in Canada, and #18 in New Zealand. The second single release off of this album was Hot Mess and was met with mediocre ratings.

Tour goes International

Cobra Starship has recently played at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards competition, on the Jimmy Kimmel outdoor stage, and at the Los Premios MTV Latinoamerica 2009, where they won the MTV Award for Best Performance.

This band has big plans for the 2010 touring year, planning on going "a bunch of places we haven't been yet". They are starting out in February on a big tour that will include Japan, New Zealand, Ireland, England, Australia, Indonesia, and the Philippines (among others) and in April they will start out on their "Hand Gesture" tour with 3OH!3 in the US.
