Chrisette Michele – Soul’s New Diva!

At the end of the day, I think that music lovers are going to love me. I think the pop songs that are on my album will be loved by the pop listeners and the R&B songs will be loved by the R&B people. I think that each song has a broad enough sound that I won’t be pigeon holed. At the same time I think it is appealing to many different audiences- Chrisette Michele

Early Years

Chrisette Michele was born Central Islip, New York. She grew up in a family where both parents were serving the church. She herself started singing in choir before she became a teenager. She also led choirs in High School. She graduated from Five Towns College with a degree in vocals.

Career Beginning

Chrisette started getting a lot of session work as a back-up singer for several RnB performers. That body of work led her to working with famous rap and RnB starts such as Nas, Jay-Z and The Game.  She also collaborated with Kanye West. She signed with Island-Def Jam records and started working on her solo effort.

Going Solo!

Her first album, “I Am” was released in June 2007, as a marketing strategy the song “Your Joy” was a free download on iTunes. The album spawned several singles which were minor hits. The album debut at No.29 on the US album charts and has eventually sold just short of the Gold certification. In Dec 2007, “Be Ok” was released which peaked at No.61 on the RnB charts. The single featured Will.i.Am; the song which was about breaking up with a boyfriend as the same theme appeared on the music video as well. The single would go on to win a Grammy is considered an up-tempo song with hip-hop influence.

In 2008, she collaborated with The Roots on the song “Rising Up”. From May-July of 2008 she went on a co-headlining tour with Raheem DeVaughn. The tour was hugely successful and Solange Knowles was the opening act. During the tour she was recording and mixing her second album. And eventually started to record the album in full steam which lead o the release of the title track in Jan 2009.

The title track from the album peaked at No.14 on the RnB charts. The album features production by Rap superstar like Ne-Yo. Released on Island Def Jam records it received favorable critical response. The album “Epiphany” debut straight into the No.1 slot on the mainstream US Billboard charts. The album has sold over 400,000 copies in the US alone. Another single “All I ever think about” was released in Jan 2010.

A hugely talented artist who will surely make an impact on the future of soul/RnB music.
