Early Life


Cher was born in California to a very poor family with Armenian ancestry. She was predominantly brought up by her mother, at one point she was given to foster care due to financial issues.


Cher briefly dated actor Warren Beatty at the age of 16. Cher teamed up with Sonny Bono who was a record producer and became close friends eventually marrying him. Sonny and Cher started recording music and was averagely successful. They appeared together on numerous TV specials and it gave Cher a lot of attention. Her dark looks and hairstyle started setting a trend; her outspoken and provocative nature made her a sensation between the two.


First Success


Together they starred in the hugely popular variety TV show called The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour. The TV success gave her the confidence to record her solo albums which she actively pursued. Her first solo No.1 was "Gypsy Tramps and Thieves" in 1971. More solo success followed in '73 with "Half Breed" and "Dark Lady" in '74. As the marriage fell apart so did the show. The Cher Show in 1975 was not successful was known for Cher exposing her navel and the outlandish outfits she started to wear. She married rockstar Gregg Allman and had a son. They divorced after two years of marriage.


The Second Solo Career


Even though she reconciled with Sonny for the TV show her main interest lied in music. Cher released "Take Me Home" which was a disco hit in 1979. The album cover had Cher scantily clad in a Vikings outfit. She also recorded a duet with Meatloaf "Dead Ringer for Love". Her next releases were commercial flops and this prompted Cher to look at a movie career which was a personal ambition. By 1987 she had become very successful as an actress and went on to win an Oscar for Best Actress for the movie Moonstruck.


Buoyed by her acting success she returned to music by releasing highly successful Rock albums which had contributions from Jon Bon Jovi and Ritchie Sambora. The album "Cher" was a huge hit and has since then sold 3 million copies.


Major Success


In 1989 she released the album "Heart of Stone" which was a massive commercial success. The album has sold over 6 million copies world wide. The album was most recognized for the single "If I could turn my back", the video featured Cher in fishnet stockings and a thong aboard the USS Missouri. The ensuing Heart of Stone World tour was also a commercial success.


In 1992 juggling her acting career with music, she starred in a romantic comedy Mermaids. The soundtrack for the album has the signature Cher tune "The Shoop Shoop song (it's in his kiss)" reaching No.1 in the UK. Her 1991 album "Love Hurts" was a massive hit in Europe reaching no.1 in UK. Globally the album has sold nearly 10 million copies making it her most successful album to date. The Love Hurts World Tour was another massively successful tour in Europe. The tour again featured outlandish costumes designed for almost every song.



The Farewell tour and Massive Success


She released an album of covers "It's a Mans World" and starred and produced the controversial HBO drama "If These Walls Could Talk". In 1998 she received the devastating news of the death of Sonny Bono her first husband. She delivered the eulogy to a worldwide television audience.


In 1998 Cher recorded her biggest selling single "Believe" the Grammy award wining album of the same name was a complete departure for Cher, as the music was up tempo dance and techno. The album has sold 20 million copies world wide.


After a few high profile TV appearances, she embarked on a massively successful Living Proof: The Farewell Tour from 2002 to 2005 which has grossed an astonishing $250 million dollars.


Currently Cher is performing in Las Vegas as part of the residency at the Ceasers Palace. Her legacy as an entertainer has rarely been rivaled and never surpassed.
