Starting Young
Born Elmer Figueroa Arce, Chayanne was born into music. He grew up in a family in which everyone played an instrument, and it was a family ritual to play together. Learning music was a natural process for him. He was born in Rio Piedras, a suburb of San Juan, in Puerto Rico, and has risen to be a Latin pop star, using his talents and sheer persistence.
In the late 1970's Chayanne auditioned for the youth band, Menudo, but was told that he was too young ot join. He then turned to the Puerto Rican boy band, Los Chicos. He was invited to join the band and was a part of the group through four hit singles. The band separated in 1983, when Cheyanne and two other members left the group, due to allegedly poor working conditions. Chayanne embarked on his solo career.
Launching a Solo Career
Chayanne's solo career has been prolific, producing seventeen albums in twenty-six years. Upon the break-up of Los Chicos, Chayanne signed with RCA Ariola and recorded two albums. Three years after launching his solo career, Chayanne released a self-titled album, which offered the ballad, Peligro de Amor, and the dance track, Fiesta en America, both of which climbed to #4 on the Hot Latin Songs chart.
In 1988, Chayanne released a second self-titled album; this one offered four singles that would climb into the top ten, and Fuiste un Trozo de Hielo en la Escarcha, which peaked at #1. He was becoming renowned for his ballads, and his fans could not get enough. Subsequent albums over the next decade released single after singe that served to build his fame and popularity. In 1998, he received a Grammy nomination for the album, Atado a Tu Amor.
Sweet Success
Chayanne's thirteenth album, Mi Tiempo, was released in 2007. The album debuted at #2 on the Latin pop charts and sold 17,000 in its first week. The single, Si Nos Quedara Poco Tiempo, hit #1. Chayanne launched a promotional tour of Latin America and and the United States. Nowhere near stopping, Chayanne recently released the single, Me Enamoré de Ti, which is expected to appear on his upcoming album to be released some time this year. The single is now the theme song for the soap opera, Corazon Salvaje.
