Early Years
Cam'ron was born Cameron Giles in Harlem, New York City. He started rapping in the mid 90 with friends and even recording demos. It was a chance meeting with Rap icon Notorious B.I.G who introduced Cam'ron to his manager. Cam'ron signed with Epic/Sony records in 1998 and released his first album "Confessions of Fire" a year later '99.
The first album featured collaborations from Usher and Jermaine Dupri. The album had a hit single "Horse & Carriage" which helped the album peak at No.6 on the US Billboard charts. It also debut at No.2 on the rap charts. The album would eventually be certified Gold in America.
Commercial Breakthrough
In 2000, he released "S.D.E" which did not manage repeat the success of the first album. In 2001, under Tommy Mottola, Sony Music dropped the artist in notorious circumstances. However, helped on by his friend Damon Dash, Cam'ron signed with Rock-A-Fella Records in 2001. This resulted in the release of his third album "Come Home With Me". The album was his biggest commercial success reaching No.2 on the US Billboard charts and his first No.1 US Rap album. The album would go on to sell a million copies.
This was the perfect turnaround after being dropped by Sony Music. The album was executive produced by Jay-Z. The single "Oh Boy" peaked at No.4 on the US Singles chart and reached No.1 on the US Rap and RnB singles. It was a massive hit and featured a collaboration with Juelz Santana
The Diplomats
Cam'ron formed a band with his closest pals The Diplomat. Their first album "Diplomatic Immunity" released in 2003, was certified Gold in the US. The second album "Diplomatic Immunity 2" was another Gold hit but not as successful as the debut effort. The solo recording effort continued with the fourth album "Purple Haze". The album received poor reviews from the music press and only managed to sell 500,000 copies peaking in it No.20 on the US charts.
Leaving Rock-a-Fella
Cam'ron felt that he was not getting the support from the label management up to his satisfaction and therefore decided to part with the label. He signed with Asylum Records and released Killa Season to glorious reviews reaching No. 2 in the US billboard charts matching the chart success of Come Home with Me
Cam'ron has also acted in several movies and is scheduled to release his next album in 2010
