History
The band released their first independent single, “Rock 'n' Roll Lifestyle” in 1993, and on the US Modern Rock Tracks the single reached #31. Due to the success of the single with major radio play, Cake signed a recording contract with Capricorn Records. The band released their first full length album Motorcade of Generosity on February 7, 1994. After two years of touring and promoting their debut album, Cake released their sophomore album, Fashion Nugget, in 1996. On this album, the band did their own rendition of “I Will Survive,” a Gloria Gaynor song, and their top ten hit “The Distance.” Just like clockwork, Cake released Prolonging the Magic, they band's third album, in the fall of 1998. This album produced Cake's first #1 hit with “Never There,” which peaked at #1 on the Modern Rock Tracks. The band took a break from recording and toured the U.S., following the success of their number one hit.
During this time, Cake was dropped from Capricorn Records and were eventually signed to Columbia Records. In the summer of 2001, Cake released Comfort Eagle, their fourth album and the first to be released under their new record label. The first single from the album peaked at #7 on Modern Rock charts. Cake released Pressure Chief, their fifth album, in the fall of 2004. This album was not as successful as their previous works. Taking some time to regroup and redefine their musical style, the band released their sixth album, B-Sides, which is a compilation of cover songs and live performances in 2007. Some of the cover songs included: “Never, Never Gonna Give You Up,” “Stranger in the Night,” Mahna Mahna,” “Short Skirt/Long Jacket,” “War Pigs,” and “It's Coming Down.” Cake also released Rarities, the first album on the band's Upbeat Record Label. The band has plans to released their second album under their Upbeat Record Label due to be released some time is 2010.
Finding the Right Match
Most bands would have fizzled out by now, but Cake stood in there after all the changes in members. The original members were John McCrea, a vocalist and songwriter, Greg Brown, guitarist, Vince DiFiore, trumpeter, Shon Meckfessel on the bass, and Frank French on the drums. Shortly after the released of their first single, Meckfessel and French left the band. They were replaced with Victor Damiani on bass and Todd Roper on the drums. After changing bass players about three times, and going through a few drummers, the band finally found a group of guys that could gel together. The band line as of 2010, John McCrea, the co-founder of the group, Vince DiFiore, Xan McCurdy, Paulo Baldi, and Gabe Nelson.
