Breathe Carolina: Sounds from Scratch
"I think it's just something different."
Now that audio recording and editing software has become so available, it's common for a kid or two on your street to try his or her hand at music. Most of them, however, won't go very far. Breathe Carolina's is a story that's the stuff of musical movies: two friends just playing around at home turn into an internationally known musical act. It's a feat that few neighborhood musicians can call their own.
Breathe Carolina Begins - On a Mac
The duo's story begins in Denver, Colorado in 2007. David Schmitt and Kyle Even, two Denver natives, began recording songs for fun on a computer. They then had the idea of putting their work up on online social network MySpace, where their fan base quickly took root. After the initial positive response, the two decided to keep it up and post even more songs on their MySpace page.
MySpace proved to be fertile ground for the pair, as it helped them grow from a literal garage band to a more serious musical act. It had gotten so big that Even chose to leave a good-paying job as a photographer so that he would have more time to tour with the band. Over 10,000 listeners clicked their way to the duo's MySpace profile in 2008, and by 2009 their songs on the site had been played more than 9 million times.
Gossip was released in November 2007 as Breathe Carolina's first EP, an iTunes-only release. From playing at parties of friends, the two - along with their live performance entourage - took to a Chevy van and began playing at different music events. The self-released EP, however, is no longer available on iTunes.
As is the usual case in the musical industry, a record label deal wasn't long to follow. Rise Records signed the duo on right before the release of Gossip, for their 2008 debut album It's Classy, Not Classic. The new album featured a track list very similar to that on Gossip, with a few added songs. Aside from a new tour schedule, the new album also gave the duo their very first music video - the only one from their debut.
Breathe Carolina's Big Breaks
Just after finishing the Take Action Tour in 2009, Breathe Carolina announced that a new album was in the works, this time with Fearless Records. The first song on the new album, Welcome to Savannah, came out in June 2009 on a sampler album from the label. The album itself, Hello Fascination, was released not long after, in August 2009.
It seems that mainstream success is on the horizon for the electronica/techno duo. Aside from headline slots on the EZ Bronz Tour, they landed a cover of Substream Music Press. The track Hello Fascination has also been used in a handful of mainstream television shows.
