When I was a kid nobody said that that was something that could be done, but, when you take a risk, and take a chance, and explore all of your talents, you’re able to do things that people say you can’t do.
Music in the Blood
Brandy Norwood, known on stage simply as Brandy, is the daughter of a former gospel singer and choir director. With his help and support, she began singing at the Los Angeles Forum at the age of six, and by eleven years old, she was singing back-up for an R&B boy band called Immature. In 1993, at the age of fourteen, Brandy auditioned for a record deal with Atlantic Recording Corporation, and was awarded a contract.
Prior to the release of her debut album, Brandy, Brandy released the first single, I Wanna be Down. The song soared to #1 on the Top R&B Charts and stayed there for four weeks. The single was extremely popular and helped promote the next single, Baby, which also went to #1. By the time the album was released, her new-found fan base was anxiously waiting, and the album debuted at #20 on the Billboard Top 200, and went on to sell over 6 million copies worldwide.
Riding the Wave
Brandy's second album, Never Say Never, was released in 1998. The first release was a single recorded with singer, Monica, The Boy is Mine. The song went to #1 and stayed there for thirteen weeks. The record label released the album globally and Never Say Never became what would be her most successful album, selling over 14 million copies worldwide.
After a hiatus from music to work on a television sit-com, Moesha, Brandy released her third album, Full Moon, in 2002, followed by Afrodisiac in 2004. Afrodisiac was produced by Justin Timberlake's production company, Timbaland, and the critical reviews were outstanding, citing a maturity to Brandy's music that had not been present before. Commercial success was only moderate, however.
A Diverse Career
Brandy went on to record a compilation album in 2005, and her most recent studio album, Human, in 2008. This was her debut album with Epic Records, the album saw opening week sales of 73,000 copies. Debuting at #15 on the Billboard, Top 200, this was also her lowest charting album in her career.
So far in her career, Brandy has been nominated for fourteen Grammy Awards, winning one, and has been nominated for and won seven Billboard Awards. Brandy toured Europe and the United States throughout 2009, and is currently seeking a new record label. Downloads of two recently completed remixes are available at her official website.
