Hip hop artists KRS-One, D-Nice, and DJ Scott La Rock came together in 1987 to form Boogie Down Productions. They were fresh and different, combining dance hall reggae with tradition hip hop and rap. KRS-One, nee Laurence Krisna Parker, was just being released from a short jail term when he met social worker Scott Sterling in a Bronx shelter, who was also a DJ performing as Scott La Rock. The two hit it off and formed Boogie Down Productions.

The group rapped primarily about life in the Bronx, creating the beginnings of gangsta rap. KRS-One's narratives about life on the street grew a huge following for Boogie Down Productions, but the front man wanted to get another message out as well. He devoted many of his lyrics to politically and socially conscious material, creating an interesting combination for the group of violent, disturbing narratives and conscious, thoughtful material. The second of the two paved the way for the Afrocentric Native Tongues movement.
