Bloc Party

We’re a lot more competent these days. And sweatier.

Hailing from the UK

The group of Bloc Party members would come together in the city of Essex when members Russell Lissack and Kele Okereke would meet in 1998 while still in high school. After meeting again in 1999, the two would recruit Gordon Moakes and Matt Tong to form their new band. The band was said to have created their name through the fusing of the Bloc’s of eastern and western ideas but the name was not politically motivated.

First Albums

The group would come together to release their first song that would be released on a compilation album called The New Cross, which was released by Angular Recording Corporation. They would next release a single called She’s Hearing Voices on a new record label called Trash Aesthetics. Their break would come when one of the members would get their demo out to some influential people in the UK music world. They would release their debut album called Silent Alarm in February of 2005 and was instantly criticized on a positive note. It would win the NME Album of the Year and would go on to reach number three on the UK Albums Charts. The single that was released from the album called So Here We Are/Positive Tension would make it to the top five position of the UK Top 40 chart as well. Other singles off of the album would go on to attain other positions on the UK charts.

Success and Spanning Fame

The group would also gain acclaim in the United States during this time and begin to tour in support of their album to be released in the United States. The would sell out shows in Miami as well as Berkley California and their album would end up selling four hundred thousand copies in the United States and over one million throughout the world. They would begin to gain the attention of other groups within the United States and would go on to collaborate with these groups to produce other music.

The group would eventually go back to the studio and come out with the album called A Weekend in the City that was released in February of 2007. It was available for download on the UK iTunes but not available as a free music download. The album would reach charts in many different countries such as the UK, New Zealand, and Australia and would reach the Billboard 200 in the United States. The song The Prayer would create the best position as of yet for the group in the UK Top 40 Charts.

The second single on the album called I Still Remember would also gain them their highest chart mark in the United States as well. The band would go on numerous tours for support of this album as well as the other albums that were previously produced. They had gained the attention of millions of fans throughout the world and would solidify their position in the music world through this success. Their music was fresh for everyone and not only were they gaining many new fans, but also respect from many new and up and coming bands.

The group would release their next album called Intimacy and was actually played in entirety on a BBC radio show. The group had a sound, which is dubbed as electronica, which is a popular new musical experiment by many new rock groups today. More information on the band can be viewed at their official web site where fans can find more reviews of their music as well as upcoming dates where they will be making their next appearances.
