What I do is sing and pick the guitar, and when you get that kind of attention happening all the sudden like that, you don't know how to react.

Getting Started

Blake Tollison Shelton is a country singer, born and raised in Ada, Oklahoma. When he was seventeen years old, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue a career in music. He performed in small local clubs and distributed demos until he was offered a recording contract in 1998 with Giant Records. In 2001, he released the single, Austin, which went to #1 and stayed there for five weeks on the Billboard Top Country Hits. During that time, Giant Records dissolved, and he was transferred to the parent company, Warner Bros. Records.

He included Austin on his debut album, Blake Shelton, which was released later that year. In addition to his former hit, the album spawned the singles, All of Me and Ol' Red, which was a cover on an George Jones song. The album received positive reviews and certified gold in sales.

Building Momentum

The Dreamer was the second album release for Blake Shelton in 2003. His initial single, The Baby, reached #1 on the Top Country Hits chart and stayed there for three weeks. Additional singles, Heavy Liftin' and Playboy of the Southwestern World, charted but did not see the same success. The album certified gold. Shelton released his next album only a year later. Blake Shelton's Barn and Grill, another gold record, released two Top Ten singles, Some Beach, which stayed at #1 for four weeks, and Nobody But Me. The album came with a DVD, entitled Blake Shelton's Barn and Grill: A Video Collection.

Pure BS in 2007 and Startin' Fires in 2008 continued Shelton's record of commercially successful, well received material. The single, She Wouldn't Be Gone, which appears on Startin' Fires, marked his fourteenth Top 40 hit and his fifth to hit #1. Critics referred to the music of Startin' Fires as solid and strong, but consistent and safe, taking few chances.
