Blackstreet

“It wouldn't be fair for the fans that are going to appear and be here at the Staples Center not to see his casket.”

Blackstreet has shown that they are able to overcome difficulties and still remain a well known recording group, regardless of the loss of members over the years they still remained strong.

Pioneers of New Jack Swing

This American R&B group was founded in 1991. The founding members included Teddy Riley and Chauncey Hannibal. Both Riley and Hannibal began searching for additional members to complete their group which finally happened with the addition of members Levi Little and Joseph Stonestreet. The style of new jack swing overran R&B with a new sound that has been becoming more popular over the years. With other groups following in this style including the founder Teddy Riley’s other group Guy has shown their talent with this sound, with the different members of that group as well as blackstreet.

The original members of the group recorded the single titled “Baby Be Mine” on the CB4 movie soundtrack which was released in 1993. Soon after the release of their first single group member Joseph Stonestreet left the group and was replaced by new group member Dave Hollister.

Rise up the charts

The group’s first album BLACKstreet was released in 1994 which included two top 40 hits. Following up to the release of their first album the group released their second album Another Level which was released in 1996. This album proved to be even a larger success than that of their first alum. Another Level had the top single “No Diggity” which was a number one hit on the charts in November of 1996. The single also earned the group the 1998 Grammy Award for Best R&B performance by duo or group with vocals. However their third album Finally gave the group a top ten record.

Fading out of the lime light

In 1999 Blackstreet broke up soon after the release of their third album, with personnel issues affecting the group. One of the issues that the group had was that the members of the group continued to change which affected some of the group member’s willingness to stay with the group. However the group was down but not out.

Resurrection

The group came back together in 2003 and released their fourth album which was widely considered to be just a reunion album. In 2006 blackstreet became involved with the New Jack Reunion Tour however there was some new members in the group. The members of blackstreet that performed for the tour was Teddy Riley the last founding member also included J-Stylz who replaced co-founder Chauncey Hannibal, also additional members Mark Middleton and Eric Williams. After the tour the group lost member J-Stylz in 2008 who was replaced by the co-founder of the group beginning the reunion of another level lineup.  The group is now working on a new album with the return of member Dave Hollister who left the group thirteen years earlier. Over the years while Blackstreet has performed they have  done collaborations with other well known artists including Dr. Dre, Eve, Ja Rule, and Janet Jackson. Teddy Riley still performs with his other group Guy, in 2009 he performed with the group at the BET awards.
