Beyonce - Beyond Pop Star

The Queen B
Beyonce has captured the media spotlight and the imagination of millions of fans world wide. She is the current Queen of Pop, the world's sexiest diva, wife of rap superstar Jay Z, 11-time Grammy award winner and easily one of the most successful artists of the last 10 years. Her hip-hop pop style, sensual and brutal honesty in her song writing has made her a phenomenal success story. The highly stylized videos and stage production is tailor-made for the new MTV/Internet generation. She is also a fantastic singer with a deep emotional voice which reminds you of Etta James (she even played Etta James in a 2008 movie) or Aretha Franklin. Along with her band Destiny's Child, she had already captured America and now a solo artist has achieved far greater success. Beyonce has also acted in several movies showcasing her multi talent.
Destiny's Child
Beyonce was born and raised in Texas. She grew up on not only gospel music but also Beatles and in particular John Lennon. Beyonce as a child even performed the Lennon classic "Imagine" to win a local talent show. By 1993 she was already performing in an all-girl band called Destiny's Child and in 1997 they recorded their first major single "Killing Time" for the Men in Black movie soundtrack. In the next 7 years, Destiny's Child would have several line-up changes and internal fights. But they would also sell nearly 20 million albums, win 5 Grammy awards and go on sell-out tours. Easily the most successful all-girl bands in American history.
The Soloist
In '01 and '02 Beyonce collaborated with several artists including future husband Jay Z. She also starred as Foxy Cleopatra in the Austin Powers movie. By 2003 Beyonce released her first solo album on Columbia records called "Dangerously in Love". A seductive cover which raised a few eyebrows, though not a huge departure from sound of Destiny's Child was more soul oriented. The songs used heavy production and fused Arabic sounds into some songs. Beyonce stuck to using an ensemble of producers creating a sound which was contemporary RnB mixed with hip-hop. The No.1 single "Baby Boy" had the infectious beat and the over dub of Sean Paul rap.
The creative production ensured that the mixing sounded perfect. "Crazy in Love" featured a Jay Z rap was also quite successful. As part of the album backdrop it was widely rumored that Beyonce and Jay-Z were seeing in each other. This rumor only helped with the intrigue and interest in the album. The album has sold over 4 million copies.
The Dangerously in Love tour was Beyonce's first ever solo tour. Though she had been performing from a very young age this was going to be a career changing moment in her life. The tour was a huge success and she got the best reviews of her career.
The Icon Status
In 2006 she released "B'day". The album debut at No.1 on the Bill board charts cementing her solo superstar status; the album featured single "Déjà vu" with boyfriend Jay-Z and "SugaMamma". The singles were not chart toppers but the promotion and marketing of the album ensured that it sell three million albums in the US alone. Musically the album uses the hip-hop fuse RnB flavor again like its predecessor. Lyrically the album was not cohesive. The focus was not about making a great record as suppose to making a hit record. The second album to a lot of critics is considered one of her weaker efforts but till date has sold 6 million copes world wide.
Beyonce shook off the criticism with a second sell-out solo world tour which by now confirmed her commercial potential well and beyond Destiny's Child.
