Bek Campbell was born in the city of Los Angeles in 1970. His father was a Canadian musician and his mother was also an entertainer. Coming from such a background, it should be no surprise that Beck became one of the leading solo artist to produce his own music by playing most of the instruments himself. His diverse genre goes across almost every board in the music industry.
Career Start
Beck would begin his music career in the early to mid 1980's when he would travel to Europe and begin playing on corners to develop his style. He would develop his own nature and then move back to New York City to begin playing with a punk rock band although he would not play for the group for very long. He would dabble in production but would eventually return to his birth place of Los Angeles in the early 1990's and would participate in many small time jobs to afford himself the time to practice his music. The first album that he would lay down in full length would come in 1993 when he released Golden Feelings through the Sonic Enemy record company. It would be produced in very small amounts and there are not many copies available.
He would go on to sign with Bong Load Custom Records where he would begin producing a musical hip hop style and would go on to release the next album this time on Flipside Records that was a total of twenty five tracks called Stereo pathetic Soul manure. The album contained the song Satan Gave Me a Taco as well as Rowboat, a song that Johnny Cash would later cover on one of his albums. Beck would gain moderate success from this album and would definitely get the attention of the music industry; however, his big break was yet to come.
Further Success
Shortly after the release of the twenty five track album, Beck would release his greatest selling and most critically acclaimed album to date called Mellow Gold. The album would contain the hit called Loser and would propel him into the eyes of the mainstream. The song Loser was played on radios across the country and while everyone was unsure of its meaning, they were all sure that they liked it.
Some critics thought that he was going to be nothing more than a one hit wonder due to the release of his next album called Odelay although the album would sell numerous copies and give him a solid following of fans. From these albums, he had become a mainstream success and would begin to have a fan base that would follow him and buy his albums religiously. He would earn two Grammy Awards for the single Where It's At off of the Odelay album and the critics were made to eat their words.
Later Albums to Present
After success with both albums, he had a solid fan base and would go on tour for awhile, he would take a short break and go back in the studio to create Mutations, which was a folksy album with added style with a mix of blues. The album was released on the record label called Bong Load Records. After some litigation with Geffen and Bong Load Records, the album would go on to win Beck the Best Alternative Music Performance at the 1999 Grammy Awards. He would go on to release a few more albums and win another Grammy for one of them.
