The Early Years


Barry White was born in Texas but growing up in the dangerous neighborhood of South Central Los Angeles. He had to be tough to survive and therefore by the age of 16 he was involved in petty crimes. At age 17, he was arrested for theft and even spent four months in jail for stealing tires worth $30,000


Barry White has often said that it was hearing Elvis Presley sing "It's Now or Never" while in prison which inspired him to change the course of his life. His initial success came as a songwriter and was credited for arranging "Harlem Shuffle" for Bob and Earl in 1963. A song which would be even covered by legendary The Rolling Stones

He began life as A&R manager for Mustang/Bronco Records and helped signing disco artists in 1965.


The Big Break


In 1972 he got his break when his friend and music businessman help finance his start and made White his protégé. He wrote and produced the minor hit single "Waling in the Rain (with the one I love)".
