Barbra Streisand

Success to me is like having ten honeydew melons and eating only the top half of each slice.

Brooklyn Born

Born in the city of Brooklyn New York, Barbra Streisand grew up in a Jewish family in 1942. She would start off her music career at a young age but would have a pretty tough time due to the fact that the world was not quite ready for her unique singing style. She would play many nightclubs and bars before she would eventually get her big break and would be propelled into the music and acting industry as one of the most popular female artists of all time.

Early Career

Barbra Streisand began singing in the many nightclubs and bars around New York City at the upstart of her career but would have a long road ahead of her before she would get recognized as a singer. She did some acting and singing work in the off Broadway play called Driftwood as well as many appearances on television for special shows. She would produce her first album that was mostly a compilation of her televised appearances and the album would be called My Name is Barbra.

She would have televised appearances before this release with industry greats such as Judy Garland and Ethel Merman. She would release a couple of albums in the early to mid 1960’s that would gain minimal success and her attempt at the more contemporary sound of rock n’ roll would at first prove to be quite unsuccessful. Her next big break would come with her album produced in 1971 called Stoney End. This would propel her back into the spotlight and would go on throughout the decade to release many number one hits such as The Way We Were and Evergreen.

Continued Success

Barbra Streisand would see countless moments of success during the 1970’s and at the end of the decade she would be named the most successful singer of the United States. Elvis Presley and The Beatles were the only artists as of that time who had sold more albums than herself. She would rocket into the 1980’s with her hit album called Guilty, which contained the hit songs Woman In Love and What Kind of Fool. After continued mainstream success, Streisand was said to have gone back to her roots of show tunes when she released the album called The Broadway Album.

The album would go to the number one position on the album charts and hold at that spot for three weeks. Although many were surprised at the complete turn around back to this musical genre, the album was highly successful. In 1993, Streisand would be compared to the female version of Frank Sinatra as far as her type of music and her many musical achievements were concerned. Finally, in the early to mid 1990’s, she would decide to go back on tour, which is something she had not done in over twenty seven years mainly due to her issues with stage fright.

When the concert tour was announced, tickets to most of the shows were sold out in under one hour. She would perform on New Year’s Eve in 1999 in Las Vegas, which would be the biggest grossing performance in the history of Las Vegas.

Present

Barbra Streisand has delighted both young and old people across the globe and continues to create a more diverse fan base with every record sold and every concert attended. Her many fans can find more information on the history of the artist throughout the internet and may be able to find some of her music available as free music downloads or at minimum internet screening.
