Starting off as an independent group, the band Atreyu would get its start in many small town clubs and bars across Orange County, California. The group would play and rehears and eventually released its first independent album called Visions in 1999. The album contained only six tracks and was sold at virtually every place they would play. Another short release would be a five track album called Fractures in the Façade of Your Porcelain Beauty.

These tracks would all be re worked and later re released on their other albums in somewhat b side style. The band got its first record label contract with Victory Records in 2001, which would prove to be where they would gain most of their acclaim. Victory Records were noted at this time for signing up and coming metal bands, which is one of the reasons the group chose them.

Albums Up

The group’s first full length album would be released in 2002 called Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses, which was an edgy fast paced style that they were used to. The band wasted no time and filmed a video for the single Ain’t Love Grand as well as Lip Gloss Black. The video for Lip Gloss Black would make its way to the famous late night metal rock television show Headbanger’s Ball where it would receive significant air time and would gain the group some attention from the main stream.

After a tour that would support the album release, Atreyu went back into the studio and came out with The Curse in 2004, which would prove to be a much greater success than the first album. The Curse would sell over four hundred and fifty thousand copies and was also featured on the soundtrack of the hit movie starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie called Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Their song Exs and Ohs would be featured on Madden NFL ’07 as well, further gaining them more popularity with the younger audiences.

Again, a tour ensued and immediately after the ban went back to the studio to release their third full length studio album called A Death-Grip on Yesterday in March of 2006. This was their first album to make it to the Billboard 200 where it would climb to number nine and sell over sixty nine thousand copies.

New Label

After their third album release, the band decided it was time to move on and would sign on for an international contract with Roadrunner Records as well as Hollywood records for all of their United States needs. The band would go on to release the album Lead Sails Paper Anchor, which had a different style on it and although it debuted at number eight on the Billboard 200, the album would sell forty three thousand copies in its first week.

The group started on the Taste of Chaos Tour in 2008 which would take the group to New Zealand and Australia where they were met with a warm reception.
