Genres: Alternative/Indie,RockOnce a band breaks up, it can mean the end of the line for any artist's career. That is, unless they decide to go out and form a whole new group altogether. Angels and Airwaves is the product of the latter option, the choice of the man who would go on to become the group's vocalist. The new sound combined with an old reputation for great music was a potent mix, as their meteoric rise in so short a time will amply prove.

Angels and Airwaves: Assembling the Band
Rock band Blink 182 was officially on hiatus as of February 2005, which effectively left all its members free to pursue other projects. That's exactly what vocalist and guitarist Tom DeLonge did. He brought together David Kennedy (guitarist, formerly of Box Car Racer), Ryan Sinn (bassist, formerly of The Distillers), and Atom Willard (drummer, formerly of The Offspring) in his basement studio to quietly do some recording.
After keeping mum about the potential breakup of Blink 182 - and any of his side projects - DeLonge finally broke the silence in September that year, announcing the name of his new band. Single The Adventure was released prematurely in 2006 but did exceedingly well, and the album We Don't Need to Whisper quickly followed, going gold not long after.

Bassist Sinn left the lineup the next year, citing only difficulties within the group. Matt Wachter from 30 Seconds to Mars filled in for a concert engagement at MIT, but was soon confirmed as the band's newest permanent member.
I-Empire, the group's sophomore album, was released in late 2007, and featured a much lighter sound compared to that of Whisper; it was, however, meant as a continuation of a story begun in their debut. Love, a third album, began production in 2009, but was delayed when DeLonge's old band reunited and went on tour. It was finally released on Valentine's Day 2010, available as a free download online with a bonus track for donors to the band.
